Is GPT-6 Free in ChatGPT? Yes, as GPT-6 Luna, Not Sol or Astra

Yes. GPT-6 began rolling out to ChatGPT Free on October 8, 2026, powered by GPT-6 Luna. GPT-6 Sol, Astra and higher thinking levels still require a paid plan.

Is GPT-6 free in ChatGPT: GPT-6 Luna at $0 on Free and Go, GPT-6 Sol from $20 a month on Plus, and GPT-6 Astra not free

Yes, GPT-6 is free in ChatGPT, with two conditions. First, the GPT-6 you get on the Free plan runs on GPT-6 Luna. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise get GPT-6 Sol in the same menu slot, and GPT-6 Astra stays behind paid plans. Second, the Free rollout is staged. OpenAI's announcement "GPT-6 and Intelligent UI for everyone" says paid tiers started on October 7, 2026 and that "starting tomorrow, the rollout expands to Free and Go tiers." So October 8 is when Free accounts start receiving it, not a date by which every account has it.

The Free plan does not unlock everything with a GPT-6 label. It doesn't include the Medium, High, Extra High or Pro thinking levels, GPT-6 Astra, or GPT-6 Sol. The OpenAI API isn't included either, and no ChatGPT plan includes it. If you're deciding whether to pay, the question isn't "GPT-6 or not" but which GPT-6 model and which features you need.

Which GPT-6 model each ChatGPT plan gets, as of October 8, 2026

OpenAI uses "GPT-6" as a family name. The menu entry in ChatGPT just says GPT-6, and the plan decides which model sits behind it. Here is how the plans line up across ChatGPT's Chat tab, the Work and Codex tabs in the desktop app, and the API, based on OpenAI's announcement, the ChatGPT release notes and the ChatGPT pricing page.

Business and Enterprise get the same Chat access as Pro: GPT-6 Sol, every thinking level and GPT-6 Pro. On Enterprise, availability also depends on the workspace admin's settings.

Prices are in US dollars. ChatGPT charges local currency in some countries, so your checkout page may show a different number.

Why GPT-6 isn't showing on your ChatGPT Free account yet

The most likely reason is the staged rollout. OpenAI gave the Free and Go start date but no completion date and no per-account schedule. An account that still shows the old model on October 8 or 9 hasn't necessarily been left out.

OpenAI's own pages also disagree right now, which explains some of the confusion. As of October 8, 2026, the help article "GPT-6 and other models in ChatGPT" still says GPT-6 is rolling out "to eligible paid accounts" and that "Free and Go users receive GPT-5.6 Luna." Its last edit came before the Free rollout began, so it doesn't yet reflect the October 7 release note. The pricing page has already switched. It now lists unlimited GPT-6 text chats on the Free plan and marks GPT-6 Luna as included for Free and Go.

Your own account is the reliable signal. To check it:

  1. Open the model menu in a new chat. OpenAI's help says the entry reads "GPT-6" rather than a model name like Sol, and that if it's missing, "it may not be available for your account yet."
  2. Update the app or use the web. GPT-6 arrives with Intelligent UI, ChatGPT's interactive answers such as side-by-side comparisons, diagrams and calculators. It runs on the web and on updated apps. OpenAI says older ChatGPT desktop apps for macOS and Windows don't support it and suggests using the web instead.
  3. Watch for an interactive answer. Intelligent UI works only with GPT-6, so a comparison panel or calculator inside a reply is a strong hint that GPT-6 is answering. A plain text reply proves nothing, because ChatGPT still uses simple text when that fits the question. You can reduce the visuals by turning off "Layout and visuals" in Settings.
  4. Make sure you're signed in. The logged-out chatgpt.com page doesn't display a model name, and OpenAI hasn't said whether logged-out visitors get GPT-6 Luna.

Four checks for GPT-6 on a ChatGPT Free account: the model menu, an updated app or the web, interactive answers, and being signed in

If none of these show GPT-6 yet, check again over the next few days.

GPT-6 doesn't have its own country list. If ChatGPT isn't available where you are, or a school or work network blocks it, that's a separate problem from GPT-6. See ChatGPT Unblocked at School, Work or Abroad: Find the Block.

GPT-6 timeline: paid-only in September, Free from October 8

"Free users can't use GPT-6" was true in Chat until this week. GPT-6 Astra launched on September 3, 2026, starting with a limited set of organizations. On September 22, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna arrived in Work and Codex, which OpenAI described as "separate from the models available in Chat." GPT-6 reached the Chat tab on October 7 for paid tiers and on October 8 for Free and Go. Before that, Free accounts had run on GPT-5.6 Luna since early August. Any answer dated before October 8 that says "Free gets GPT-5.6 Luna" was correct when it was written.

Is free GPT-6 the same as GPT-6 on Plus? No, Luna vs Sol

No. OpenAI says the two are "both tuned for everyday conversation," but they are different models with different allowances.

  • Model tier. OpenAI's API pricing shows how far apart they sit. GPT-6 Sol costs $2.00 per million input tokens and $10.00 per million output tokens, while GPT-6 Luna costs $0.10 and $0.50. That's a 20× difference. Price isn't a quality score, but it shows the two aren't interchangeable.
  • How much it can read at once. On the pricing page, Free's Instant context window is 27K tokens, roughly 12 pages of input. Go and Plus get 54K, about 40 pages. If you paste a long contract or a whole chapter, Free may run short where Plus wouldn't. The reasoning context on Free is listed only as "varies."
  • Thinking. Plus users can choose Medium or High thinking with GPT-6 Sol. Free users have a Think button for harder questions. OpenAI hasn't said which model powers Think since the switch. The help page that says it uses GPT-5.6 Luna predates the Free rollout.

For everyday conversation, the use OpenAI tuned both models for, the gap matters less. If you need longer documents, adjustable reasoning or Astra, the plan is what limits you, not the GPT-6 label.

What "unlimited GPT-6" on the Free plan covers

"Unlimited" applies to everyday text chats, and OpenAI attaches abuse-prevention safeguards to it. OpenAI's GPT-6 help article says "separate limits continue to apply to file uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis, and other tools." The pricing page describes those Free allowances as limited without giving numbers.

The one Free tool limit OpenAI does publish is file uploads. Its help article on uploading files to ChatGPT says Free users can upload 3 files per day and that OpenAI may lower limits during peak hours. Intelligent UI has no separate quota, so interactive answers don't draw from any extra allowance.

When you hit a Free limit, ChatGPT tells you when it resets. According to the ChatGPT Free tier FAQ, upgrading to Plus, Pro or Business resets your Free rate limits. Waiting for the reset is the free option. OpenAI Support can't reset ChatGPT usage limits for you.

Is GPT-6 Astra free? The cheapest plan for each GPT-6 upgrade

GPT-6 Astra isn't free anywhere in ChatGPT. The pricing page marks Astra as unavailable on Free and Go. Inside ChatGPT, the lowest-cost way to use it is Plus at $20 a month, but only in Work and Codex, not in Chat.

If you wantCheapest plan that includes it (as of October 8, 2026)
GPT-6 in Chat at no costFree, as GPT-6 Luna
More uploads, image generations and longer memory, same GPT-6 LunaGo, $8/month (the plan may show ads)
GPT-6 Sol in Chat, plus Medium and High thinkingPlus, $20/month
GPT-6 Astra or GPT-6.1 Sol in Work and CodexPlus, $20/month, with limited usage
GPT-6 Pro (Astra) in Chat, or Extra High thinkingPro, from $100/month
GPT-6 models in your own app or scriptOpenAI API, pay as you go

Cheapest plan for each GPT-6 upgrade: Go at $8 for more uploads, Plus at $20 for GPT-6 Sol or Astra in Work and Codex, Pro from $100 for GPT-6 Pro in Chat, and the API billed separately

Go is easy to misread. It raises your tool allowances, but its chat model is still GPT-6 Luna, and it adds no thinking levels. If you're paying to get a smarter GPT-6, Plus is the first plan that changes the model.

If a Plus trial offer shows up in your account, check it before entering a card. ChatGPT Plus Free Trial: How to Verify an Offer on Your Account covers what a real offer looks like.

GPT-6 in the ChatGPT desktop app, Work and Codex on the Free plan

The October 7 release covers only the Chat tab. OpenAI says "the models powering Work and Codex aren't changing with this release." So getting GPT-6 Luna in Chat tells you nothing about Work or Codex.

The Free plan does include limited Work and Codex in the desktop app. OpenAI's pages disagree on which model you get there. The Codex pricing page on ChatGPT Learn lists "GPT-6 Luna at Standard speed in the desktop app, subject to rollout" for Free and Go. The chatgpt.com pricing table and the GPT-6 help article list GPT-5.6 Terra for Free and Go in desktop Work and Codex. The model picker in your desktop app settles it. Image generation isn't available in Codex on the Free plan.

There's no separate GPT-6 download. GPT-6 comes inside the official ChatGPT web, mobile and desktop apps. If you use the desktop app, update it, because older versions of the macOS and Windows apps don't show Intelligent UI.

Is the GPT-6 API free? No free tier, and ChatGPT plans don't include it

The OpenAI API has no free tier for GPT-6 models, and a ChatGPT subscription doesn't cover API usage. OpenAI's Plus help page says "API usage is separate and billed independently."

The one exception is conditional. OpenAI's help article on sharing API inputs and outputs with OpenAI says some organizations qualify for daily complimentary tokens on traffic they share with OpenAI. gpt-6-luna, gpt-6-sol, gpt-6.1-sol and gpt-6-astra are in its 1M-tokens-per-day group, or 250K on the Build level. You still need a positive account balance, only shared traffic counts, and anything over the daily cap is billed at normal rates. Shared data can be used to evaluate and train models, so it isn't suitable for confidential work.

These are the standard rates for prompts up to 272K input tokens on OpenAI's API pricing page, as of October 8, 2026:

Model IDInput per 1M tokensCached input per 1MOutput per 1M tokens
gpt-6-luna$0.10$0.01$0.50
gpt-6-sol$2.00$0.20$10.00
gpt-6.1-sol$2.00$0.10$10.00
gpt-6-astra$10.00$1.00$50.00

For scale, take one chat-sized request with 2,000 input tokens and 500 output tokens. That's an assumed size, not a measured one.

  • gpt-6-luna: 2,000 × $0.10 / 1M + 500 × $0.50 / 1M = $0.0002 + $0.00025 = $0.00045
  • gpt-6-sol: 2,000 × $2.00 / 1M + 500 × $10.00 / 1M = $0.004 + $0.005 = $0.009
  • gpt-6-astra: 2,000 × $10.00 / 1M + 500 × $50.00 / 1M = $0.02 + $0.025 = $0.045

A thousand requests of that size come to about $0.45 on Luna, $9 on Sol and $45 on Astra. Longer prompts and longer answers cost proportionally more.

"Free GPT-6" sites and free-credit offers: what to check first

Sites and videos promising "GPT-6 Astra free" are separate products, not ChatGPT's Free plan. They're typically chat wrappers or API resellers that hand out starter credits, and some route requests through third-party gateways. The service, not OpenAI, decides which model actually answers, how long the credits last and what happens to your prompts.

Before you type anything sensitive or enter a card, check four things:

  • Which model answers. "GPT-6" on a third-party page could mean Luna, Sol or Astra, or a different model entirely. Look for an exact model name and reasoning level, not just a logo.
  • Who sees your data. Read the privacy terms. Some public testing sites state that conversations may be used for research. Don't paste work documents, keys or personal data into a site you haven't vetted.
  • When the free part ends. Find the credit amount, what one message costs in credits, and what happens at zero. A tiny starter balance can run out in a few Astra requests.
  • Payment and account terms. Check whether a card is required up front and whether credits auto-renew. Skip offers built on shared ChatGPT accounts or resold keys, since you can't control who else sees that account's history.

If all you need is GPT-6 for everyday chat, the Free plan on chatgpt.com is the version that costs nothing and comes straight from OpenAI.

GPT-6 free access FAQ

Will GPT-6 be free? It already is on the Free plan, as GPT-6 Luna in the Chat tab. The rollout began on October 8, 2026, and some accounts may take longer to receive it. GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6 Astra and the higher thinking levels remain paid.

Who has access to GPT-6? In Chat, Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise have been receiving GPT-6 Sol since October 7, 2026, with Enterprise subject to admin settings. Free and Go are receiving GPT-6 Luna from October 8. GPT-6 Pro, powered by Astra, is in Chat only on Pro, Business and Enterprise.

How much does GPT-6 cost? In ChatGPT, GPT-6 Luna is $0, GPT-6 Sol starts with Plus at $20 a month, and GPT-6 Pro in Chat starts with Pro at $100 a month. Through the API, prices run from $0.10 per million input tokens for gpt-6-luna to $10.00 for gpt-6-astra.

Is ChatGPT 6 Astra free? No. Astra isn't available on Free or Go in any ChatGPT surface. The API has no free tier either. Its only complimentary Astra tokens come through a data-sharing program for eligible organizations, and those still need a paid balance. Third-party sites offering "free Astra" are usually giving out their own limited credits.

Can I use GPT-6 without signing in to ChatGPT? OpenAI hasn't said. The logged-out chatgpt.com page doesn't display a model name. Signing in to a Free account is the documented way to get GPT-6 Luna.
