OpenAI now has an active 2026 student offer. Eligible full-time and part-time college and graduate students at qualifying U.S. degree-granting institutions can claim four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus. The offer must be claimed by October 31, 2026.
This is not a worldwide student price. A localized offer page, a school email address, or student status outside the United States does not make an account eligible. OpenAI uses SheerID to decide whether the school and current enrollment qualify.

Check eligibility before uploading documents
SheerID, not the wording on a blog or coupon page, makes the enrollment decision. Depending on the school, verification may use trusted enrollment records, the school's single sign-on system, or supporting documents.
The offer applies to current students at eligible U.S. institutions that grant degrees. It includes undergraduate and graduate students and does not require full-time enrollment. It does not state that every .edu address, community program, bootcamp, high school, or university outside the United States qualifies.
Use the account that should receive the benefit before starting the claim flow. The email used with SheerID may differ from the email on the ChatGPT account, but the promotion is attached to the ChatGPT account that is signed in during activation. OpenAI says it cannot move the promotion to another account later.
If SheerID cannot confirm enrollment, use the SheerID support path linked from the official offer page. Do not send enrollment documents to an unrelated coupon site or seller.
Existing Plus subscribers need to check who bills them
New users can activate the promotion after verification and add a payment method. Existing monthly Plus subscribers can also qualify when ChatGPT bills the subscription directly.
An Apple App Store or Google Play subscription cannot accept the offer while it remains store-billed. The official page suggests canceling through the original store and returning after the current paid period ends, but it does not promise that the promotion will still be available then. Check the October 31 deadline and the live offer flow before changing a working subscription.
Annual, Business, Pro, Edu, partner-billed, or other subscription arrangements should not be assumed eligible unless the claim flow explicitly confirms them. The published terms name new users and direct-billed monthly Plus subscribers.
Four free months still requires a payment method
The promotion covers four monthly billing periods beginning on the claim date. A valid payment method is required during activation. OpenAI says it will not charge the subscription fee during those four periods.
Afterward, Plus automatically renews at $20 per month unless canceled. Save the claim date, the account email, the confirmation screen, and the expected first paid renewal date. A calendar reminder a few days before that date is more reliable than assuming “four months” ends on the last day of a calendar month.
Cancellation has an unusual consequence. If you cancel before all four free periods are used, Plus remains active only through the end of the current monthly billing period. When cancellation takes effect, any later promotional months are forfeited. Canceling immediately after activation is therefore not equivalent to turning off renewal while preserving the entire four-month benefit.
A claim sequence that avoids the common mistakes
- Open the official student offer page in a web or mobile browser.
- Confirm that the correct ChatGPT account is signed in.
- Complete SheerID's current-enrollment check.
- Return to the offer flow after verification; verification alone does not finish activation.
- Read the checkout screen and confirm that four free monthly periods are shown before submitting a payment method.
- Save the activation confirmation and expected renewal date.
If SheerID verified you but no benefit appears, return to the offer link while signed in to the same ChatGPT account and select Claim free offer. The official FAQ says this should either continue checkout or show the account where the promotion is applied.
Students who used an earlier OpenAI student promotion are not automatically excluded. OpenAI says previous participation does not by itself prevent a claim, provided the student meets the current requirements. The 2026 offer itself can be redeemed only once.
If the U.S. offer does not apply
Do not turn a different program into a substitute claim. Each option has its own eligibility and benefit:
- ChatGPT Free is available without student verification where the service is supported. It includes everyday chat and tools with separate limits. It is not temporary Plus. See OpenAI's Free Tier FAQ.
- Codex for Students gives verified university students in the United States and Canada $100 in ChatGPT credits for Codex, subject to residence and verification requirements. The credits expire 12 months after the grant and are not API credits or free Plus. Use the official Codex student page.
- ChatGPT Edu is purchased and administered by a university. Check the campus IT portal, library, learning-technology page, or SSO workspace. A school email alone does not create Edu access. OpenAI describes the institutional product on its ChatGPT Edu page.
- Paid Plus remains an individual monthly subscription when no offer applies. Compare the actual features and limits before paying rather than buying through an account-sharing seller.
The former Australia/Colombia student-referral help page now returns a not-found page. That does not explain why it disappeared, but it is no longer a dependable official claim path and should not be presented as a current benefit.
Before you leave the claim page
You should be able to answer all of these with the official flow, not with a third-party promise:
- Which ChatGPT account receives the promotion?
- Did SheerID confirm the current school and enrollment?
- Does checkout show four free monthly periods?
- Is the subscription billed directly by ChatGPT?
- What payment method is on file?
- What is the first paid renewal date?
- What happens to unused promotional months if you cancel?
If any answer is missing, pause before activating. A real promotion can still be a poor fit when it is attached to the wrong account, conflicts with store billing, or renews before the date you expected. If you later decide not to continue, follow the correct billing channel in the ChatGPT cancellation guide and account for the loss of remaining promotional months.
