ChatGPT Plus Free Trial in 2026: Check a 7-Day or 30-Day Offer

•••12 min read•ChatGPT

There is no standing ChatGPT Plus trial that every user can start. A 7-day, 30-day, student, referral, partner, or military offer is valid for you only when your authenticated OpenAI checkout confirms the plan, benefit, renewal, and cancellation terms.

Decision flow for checking account eligibility, the Plus plan, promotional period, renewal charge, and cancellation effect on an official checkout

ChatGPT Plus does not have a standing public free trial that every account can start. OpenAI currently presents Plus as a paid consumer subscription. A 7-day, 30-day, one-month, referral, student, partner, or military offer can still be real—but only for the account and campaign that received it.

The quickest reliable test is the final authenticated checkout. Continue only if it shows all of the following:

  • the plan is ChatGPT Plus;
  • today's price matches the promised $0 period or discount;
  • the promotion has a defined duration or end date;
  • the next price and billing date are visible;
  • the cancellation effect is clear.

If a banner promises a free month but checkout shows the normal subscription price, stop. OpenAI's promotion guidance says the expected benefit must appear before you complete the purchase; do not assume it will be refunded later.

Is there a 7-day or 30-day Plus trial right now?

There is no single public duration for everyone as of July 22, 2026. Current Google results show recent users discussing one-month offers, while other pages and videos promise 7, 14, or 30 days. Those reports can describe a genuine account experiment without creating a public entitlement for a different account.

OpenAI's free-trial invite FAQ explains why the reports differ: the plan, duration, recipient, number of invites, eligible regions, and payment requirement are campaign-specific. Offers generally target new or Free users, though each campaign can set different rules. Current or former paid users may be excluded.

That gives “Try Plus free” a narrow meaning: it is evidence only after it appears on your account and survives the eligibility and checkout checks. A screenshot from Reddit, YouTube, or another country does not establish your duration.

A card can be required even when today's price is zero

Some official campaigns ask for a valid payment method before access starts. That is not automatically a scam. It does mean you are accepting a subscription that may renew when the promotion ends.

Before entering a card, record four facts from the official page: today's charge, the promotional end date, the first paid renewal date, and the renewal price. Check the currency and taxes on your own localized checkout rather than copying a price from another market.

Most promotions renew unless canceled. OpenAI recommends canceling at least 24 hours before the next billing date. There is an extra catch: canceling a free promotion can sometimes end access immediately, and the used code may not be restored. Read the campaign-specific wording before testing the cancel button.

The place you subscribed also matters. A web subscription is managed on the web, while Apple and Google Play subscriptions are normally managed through their respective stores. Looking at the ChatGPT app on a different device does not change the billing owner.

Can anyone get 12 months of Plus free?

No. Search results that mention a free year usually refer to OpenAI's narrow U.S. service benefit, not a public annual trial.

The current terms for U.S. servicemembers, veterans, and retirees cover verified eligible people within the published transition timing. The benefit belongs on a personal account and lasts one year. It renews unless canceled, and cancellation during the benefit may end access immediately.

This route is valuable for the people it serves, but it cannot be converted into “12 months free for everyone.” A method that asks an ineligible user to borrow an identity or falsify service status is not an alternative route.

Where does a legitimate one-month student offer exist?

OpenAI currently documents one month of Plus for eligible new users at participating Australian institutions and Universidad Nacional de Colombia. The Australia/Colombia student program is current, but its school and account boundaries are part of the offer.

It is not a worldwide student trial. A student elsewhere cannot qualify by switching a region setting. The old U.S./Canada two-month Plus campaign is also not current: its claim window ran from March 31 through May 31, 2025.

The current U.S./Canada student promotion is instead Codex credits for students. Those credits extend Codex usage; they do not provide Plus and are not Platform API credits. For the wider student map, use our ChatGPT student discount guide.

What if the offer comes from a referral or partner?

An official invitation may arrive by email, appear in ChatGPT, or come through an identified partner. Start with the account that received it. The sender and recipient can have different eligibility, and a link may fail after its deadline or after a similar promotion was already redeemed.

OpenAI's promotions and referrals guidance says partner benefits can be a free period, discount, or special rate. That is why “Price today” must not be reduced to “$0”: a legitimate nonzero discount can still be correct if it matches the campaign.

Codes generally cannot be sold, transferred, duplicated, or stacked unless a campaign explicitly permits it. Stop if a seller asks for money for a mass-posted code, requests your login, or supplies a shared account. Also stop if the method depends on a proxy, VPN, false region, disposable account, or borrowed school identity. Those actions do not create campaign eligibility.

What changes when the trial ends or you cancel?

The safe policy boundary is simple: ending a Plus promotion changes the subscription entitlement; it is not the same action as deleting the OpenAI account. Paid limits and features can fall back to whatever the current Free plan provides.

However, this article cannot guarantee how a particular project, memory, custom feature, or account artifact will behave after downgrade. Those surfaces change, and a Reddit report is not policy evidence. Before ending a trial that supports important work, export or preserve anything you cannot afford to lose and read the current account controls. For channel-specific steps and the difference between cancellation and deletion, follow the relevant ChatGPT subscription cancellation guide.

Do not cancel early merely to see whether a retention offer appears. OpenAI does not promise that behavior, and the current promotion may end immediately.

“Free” results that are not a Plus trial

Several adjacent products repeatedly appear in free-trial lists:

  • ChatGPT Free is the public no-cost plan, not temporary Plus. It is the safest way to test whether ChatGPT fits your workflow.
  • ChatGPT Go is a separate lower-cost consumer plan in supported markets, not discounted Plus.
  • ChatGPT Business is an organizational workspace contract. A Business trial does not prove a consumer Plus trial.
  • Codex credits extend Codex usage under their own terms.
  • API credits belong to OpenAI Platform billing. They cannot buy Plus, and Plus does not include API service credits.

If no promotion appears, use Free or compare the paid plans based on your actual workload. Our Free, Go, Plus, and Pro comparison covers that decision without treating every adjacent credit as Plus.

The code was rejected—or no offer appears

An invalid, expired, already-used, or ineligible message is a stop result, not an invitation to cycle accounts. Recheck that you used the intended account and official domain, then read the campaign terms. If the expected benefit remains absent at checkout, do not pay.

No visible offer simply means the campaign is not available to that account at that moment. There is no documented setting that guarantees a one-month trial. Use the Free plan, wait for an official account notification, or buy Plus only when its current paid terms make sense for your workload.

Quick answers

Does everyone get one month free? No. A one-month campaign can be real without being universal.

Can I buy a referral code? Do not. OpenAI's general promotion rules restrict sale and transfer, and resale removes the account and campaign assurance you need.

Can I cancel immediately and keep the full period? Not safely as a general rule. Some promotions end on cancellation. Read the exact offer terms first.

Is a Plus trial the same as free API usage? No. ChatGPT subscriptions and Platform API billing are separate contracts.
