Claude Usage Limits by Plan: What 5x and 20x Actually Multiply
Every Claude plan has a five-hour session limit; Pro and Max add a weekly one. Max 5x and 20x are per-session multiples of Pro, not message counts.
On this page

Every Claude plan, Free included, has a session limit that resets every five hours. Pro and Max add a weekly limit that applies across all models, and on paid plans claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop all draw from that same allowance. Anthropic publishes no message or token count for any plan. The only numbers it gives are relative: Max 5x gets five times Pro's per-session allowance and Max 20x gets 20 times. There is no published weekly multiple.
Claude usage limits by plan as of October 8, 2026

How to read the table:
- Prices are Anthropic's US web prices from the Pro plan and Max plan help pages. The Pro annual plan was $200 billed up front (about $17 a month) on Anthropic's pricing page as of September 3, 2026. Max is monthly only, and Anthropic notes that mobile app pricing may differ.
- The session limit resets every five hours. The weekly limit resets at a fixed time assigned to your account; it stays the same no matter when you start chatting or when you subscribed, and you get the full allowance each cycle.
- One pool: on paid plans, usage in claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop counts toward the same limits, per Anthropic's article on how usage and length limits work.
- The cloud session credit could only be claimed until October 7, 2026.
- Anthropic can add caps. Both plan pages say it may also limit usage "such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage, at our discretion."
- Team works differently by seat type and has its own section below.
What Max 5x and 20x multiply: Pro's five-hour session allowance
The Max multiples describe one window only. Anthropic's wording is that "Max 5x includes five times the Pro plan's per-session usage allowance" and "Max 20x includes 20 times the Pro plan's per-session usage allowance." Both tiers also have a weekly limit, but Anthropic doesn't say how large it is relative to Pro or to each other. So "20x" is a statement about the five-hour session, not about your week, and not a message count.
That gap leaves room for guesses. Users who moved from Max 5x to Max 20x have posted that their weekly bar fills faster than they expected, and estimates that put Max 20x at roughly two times Max 5x per week circulate on Facebook. None of those figures come from Anthropic.
The same goes for message and token counts. Numbers such as "about 45 messages per Pro session," "Free 2–5, Pro 10–45, Max 50–800 messages per five hours," "Max 20x is 100K tokens" (Morph's usage guide) or "roughly $8 of Pro usage per session and $64 per week" (a Reddit estimate) are third-party estimates. Anthropic's help center says the number of messages you can send "will vary based on message length, including the length of files you attach, the length of your current conversation, and the model or feature you use," and lists effort level as another factor.
Two dated details also feed the disagreement:
- As of September 3, 2026, the Pro help page said Pro gave at least five times Free's per-session usage during peak hours. As of October 8, 2026, it says only "more usage per session than the Free plan."
- Posts on X and Facebook describe a September 14, 2026 change: weekly limits up 25% for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise, while a temporary 50% five-hour boost that started in May ended the same day. Anthropic's release notes have no matching entry as of October 8, 2026.
Do Claude Code and claude.ai share usage limits? Yes, one allowance
Claude Code doesn't come with a separate allowance on Pro or Max. Chat on claude.ai, Claude Desktop, Claude Code in the terminal or IDE, and Claude Code cloud sessions all spend the same session and weekly limits. Whatever a long Claude Code run uses is no longer available for chat until the limit resets.

Claude Code tells you which limit stopped you:
| Message in Claude Code | What it covers | Does switching models help? |
|---|---|---|
You've hit your session limit · resets 3:45pm | The five-hour session limit, shared across models | No |
You've hit your weekly limit · resets Mon 12:00am | The weekly limit, shared across models | No |
You've hit your Opus limit or You've hit your Sonnet limit | One model family only | Yes, another family may still work |
The reset times in those messages differ for every account. To read the limit line and pick up a stopped task, see Claude Code Rate Limit Reached: Identify the Limit and Resume. To find out what is burning your allowance, see Claude Code Usage Limits: Check, Audit, and Reduce Token Usage.
One setting moves Claude Code off your plan entirely. If ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set, the session bills the API account behind that key instead of using your subscription's included usage. The Claude API is a separate product with its own billing: the Pro help page states that Pro "does not include API usage through the Claude Console."
Fable 5 and 5.1 limits: up to half the weekly limit on Max, credits on Pro
Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 follow the same rule, and the rule depends on the plan, per Anthropic's Claude Fable models on your plan page:
- Max 5x and Max 20x: you can spend up to 50% of your weekly limit on Fable models at no extra cost. Fable draws from the regular weekly limit and uses it faster than other Claude models. It is a cap inside your limit, not a bonus on top of it. After the Fable cap, you can continue with usage credits or switch models.
- Pro: Fable isn't included in the plan's limits. Every Fable request runs on usage credits from the first one.
- Free: Fable isn't available.
An earlier promotion that allowed up to 50% of the weekly limit on Fable 5 at no extra cost ended on July 19, 2026 at 11:59:59 PM PT, and it never covered Fable 5.1. For what Fable costs per plan, see Claude Fable 5.1 Usage Limits: Pro, Max, and Paid Credits.
How to get more Claude usage: what each add-on covers
When you hit a limit, your options are to wait for the reset, use an add-on or upgrade. Anthropic uses the word "credit" for three different things, and none of them do the same job:
| Option | Who gets it | What it adds | What it doesn't do | Expiry or reset |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Usage credits | Pro, Max 5x, Max 20x | Keeps Claude and Claude Code running after your included limit, billed at standard API rates | Doesn't refill your plan limits; the session limit keeps its normal five-hour reset | Prepaid; in most places they don't expire, but in some jurisdictions such as Japan they expire six months after purchase (purchases from September 10, 2026); $2,000 daily redemption limit |
| Limit reset | Eligible Pro and Max accounts, occasionally | Refills either the five-hour session limit or the weekly limit to full | Doesn't move your weekly reset day, refund usage credits already billed or undo once used | Lost if you downgrade or cancel before using it |
| Cloud session credit | Pro $100, Max $250, one per account | Spending money for Claude Code cloud sessions | Doesn't raise your usage limits or apply outside cloud sessions | Claim deadline was October 7, 2026 |
| Monthly API credits | Max 5x $100, Max 20x $200, Team per seat | Claude API and other Claude Platform usage | Doesn't change plan limits or cover interactive Claude Code or usage credits | Refresh each billing cycle, no rollover |
| Upgrade to Max | Pro and Max 5x users | 5x or 20x Pro's per-session allowance, plus Fable within the weekly limit | Max 20x has no published weekly multiple | Upgrades are prorated |

A few rules decide the order. A limit reset is free, so spend it before paying for usage credits: once usage credits have been billed, a reset doesn't refund them. Resets are activated in Settings > Usage on the web or in Claude Desktop, not in the mobile app or Claude Code in the terminal, per Anthropic's limit reset help article. When Opus 5.5 launched on September 22, 2026, Anthropic gave subscription users a reset they can save and use when they choose, and it raised five-hour limits on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise without publishing a figure. Not every account holds a reset at any given time.
Usage credits are enabled in Settings > Usage, with optional auto-reload and a monthly spend limit, per Anthropic's usage credits help article. If you subscribed through the mobile app, you turn them on from the web.

Do Max monthly API credits raise your Claude limits? No, they fund the API
The monthly API credits that Anthropic announced on October 7, 2026 pay for your own apps and agents on the Claude Platform. They're "separate from your plan limits" and "don't change your usage limits in Claude, Claude Code, or Claude Cowork," per Anthropic's monthly API credits for Max and Team plans page.
| Detail | Rule |
|---|---|
| Amount | Max 5x $100, Max 20x $200 per billing cycle |
| Not eligible | Free, Pro and Enterprise |
| When you can claim | After seven days on an eligible plan; rolling out over a few days from October 7, 2026 |
| How it's tied to your account | You link one Claude Console organization in Settings > Billing on claude.ai |
| Covered | Claude API (Messages API, Message Batches API), the Console Playground, Claude Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK |
| Not covered | Interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop or web; usage credits in Claude, Claude Code or Claude Cowork; Claude on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI or Microsoft Foundry |
| Reset | Refreshes each billing cycle; unused credits expire and don't roll over |
| When they run out | API requests stop unless the organization has purchased credits or auto-reload; nothing is charged to your Claude plan |
claude -p and the Agent SDK are the one overlap. They draw on these credits only when you run them with an API key from the linked Console organization. Signed in with your Claude plan, they still use your plan limits. Runs started by the Claude Code GitHub Action, an IDE extension or the Claude desktop app count as Claude Code usage, even with -p. These credits are also not the Agent SDK credit announced in June; Anthropic says that credit isn't available.
Where to see your Claude usage and the next reset
Each limit shows up in a specific place:
| What you want to see | Where it is |
|---|---|
| Session and weekly usage, next weekly reset, usage-credit balance, available limit resets | Settings > Usage on claude.ai |
| Plan usage bars and breakdown inside Claude Code (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise) | /usage in Claude Code (/cost and /stats open the same view) |
| Which account and billing route a Claude Code session is using | /status, which doesn't show remaining allowance |
| Five-hour and weekly usage in a custom Claude Code status line (Pro, Max) | rate_limits.five_hour and rate_limits.seven_day in the status line data |
| The time a blocked limit comes back | The limit message in Claude Code |
| Monthly API credit balance | Settings > Billing in the Claude Console |
These views show how much of each limit you've used, not how many messages remain, because Anthropic doesn't define limits as message counts. For the step-by-step check and how to cut usage, see Claude Code Usage Limits: Check, Audit, and Reduce Token Usage.
Claude Team plan limits: seat type decides Fable and API credits
On Team, the seat type decides how Fable and monthly API credits work:
- Premium seats get the Max rule for Fable 5 and 5.1: up to 50% of the weekly limit at no extra cost.
- Standard seats get the Pro rule: Fable runs on usage credits from the first request.
- Monthly API credits are $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, pooled into one balance for the organization and capped at $500 a month. A team with three Standard and two Premium seats gets 3 × $20 + 2 × $100 = $260. Discounted Nonprofit and Scientist Team plans get the same per-seat amounts. A Team Owner or Primary Owner links the Console organization in Organization settings > Billing.
- Five-hour limits apply on Team; the Opus 5.5 launch raised them without giving a number.
Anthropic's Pro, Max, Fable and API credit help pages give no figure for Team seat prices or a Team weekly limit.
Claude plan limits FAQ
Is there a daily limit on Claude or Claude Code?
No. Claude has no daily window on any plan. The limits are a session limit that resets every five hours and, on Pro and Max, a weekly limit that resets at a fixed time assigned to your account. In Claude Code you can also hit an Opus or Sonnet limit that applies to one model family.
Can I see my usage limit in Claude?
Yes. Settings > Usage on claude.ai shows how much of your session and weekly limits you've used and when the weekly limit resets. In Claude Code, /usage shows the same plan usage. Neither shows a message count, because Anthropic doesn't publish one.
Does Max 20x give you 20 times Pro's weekly limit?
Anthropic doesn't say. Its Max page defines 20x as 20 times Pro's per-session allowance. Max 20x also has a weekly limit, but no multiple over Pro or Max 5x is published, so a statement that 20x applies to the whole week isn't backed by Anthropic.
Will Claude extend usage limits?
Anthropic does raise limits, but usually without a number. The Opus 5.5 launch on September 22, 2026 raised five-hour limits on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise without giving a figure, and Anthropic's release notes have no entry for the September 14 weekly change users reported. The plan pages also reserve the right to add weekly, monthly, model or feature caps. As of October 8, 2026, the published ways to get more usage are the add-ons and upgrades in the table above.
Does a long conversation use more of my Claude limit?
Yes. Longer and more complex conversations, attached files, the model and the effort level all affect how fast you use your limit, and long chats that trigger automatic context management "consume more of your usage limit." The length limit is a separate thing: on paid plans the newest models accept up to 1M tokens of context and others 500K or 200K. File upload caps are separate again; see Does Claude Have Unlimited File Uploads? The Limits That Actually Apply.
