Claude for Startups at a glance: a free Claude Team year for five Premium seats, a $1,000 API credit with a 6-month expiry, and decisions in minutes or 2–3 business days

Claude for Startups (Anthropic also calls it Claude Startups) is Anthropic's program for companies building on Claude. Since its expansion on October 6, 2026, any startup founded in the last five years or funded in the last two can apply, and venture funding is not required. Approved companies get a free year of Claude Team for up to five Premium seats (only if the organization has never had Team), a one-time $1,000 Claude API credit, and access to partner discounts. You apply from a Claude Console account using a company email that matches your website's domain. Most decisions arrive within minutes; the rest take 2–3 business days.

The catches are mostly in the details. The credit expires six months after it's granted and works only on Anthropic's own API, not on AWS Bedrock or Google Cloud Vertex AI. The Team year has to be claimed separately, needs at least two seats and still needs a card. After 12 months it renews at the normal price. In launch week, approved founders reported that the approval email arrived late or not at all, and that unclaimed offers vanished from the Console hours later. Claim both benefits as soon as your Console page shows them. Companies based in, operating in, or serving users in excluded regions are not eligible at all.

What Claude for Startups includes as of October 8, 2026

Everything below comes from the Claude for Startups program page and Anthropic's October 6, 2026 announcement expanding Claude Startups.

BenefitWhat you actually getLimits that change the answer
Free year of Claude TeamUp to five Premium seats for 12 monthsOnly for organizations new to Team; you claim it separately after approval

Claude Marketplace helpHands-on help building a connector or plugin listing and submitting it for reviewA listing still has to be approved

The program has carried three names, and all of them describe the same thing. "Claude Startups" is the name in the announcement and the Console. "Claude for Startups" is the program page title. The binding legal document is still the Anthropic Startup Program Official Terms, last updated May 22, 2025, plus a Claude Startups Additional Benefits Addendum effective October 6, 2026. "Claude Startup Stack" refers only to the partner offers, not to money from Anthropic.

Some figures still attached to this program describe the version that ran before October 6. That version tied API credits to institutional equity funding and is quoted with tiers such as $5,000, $25,000 or "up to $100,000." None of those tiers appear on the current program page. Today every approved company gets the same $1,000 credit, and the only path to $100K is a partner VC.

The $7,000 and $45,000 figures are ceilings, not cash

Anthropic's headline says members "can get up to $7,000 in Claude products and credits." The footnote shows how that number is built: one year of Claude Team with five Premium seats at $100 per seat per month billed annually, which is 5 × $100 × 12 = $6,000, plus the $1,000 credit. "Actual value depends on your number and type of seats." Two people on Standard seats are worth far less than five people on Premium seats.

The same seats look more expensive at the checkout because the Claude pricing page lists Premium seats at $100 per month billed annually and $125 billed monthly. In the first-hand application report published by Korean company Chungoose (covered below), the checkout showed five Premium seats at $625 per month, which is 5 × $125. Twelve months at that rate is $7,500. Neither number is money you receive. It's the subscription you don't pay for during the free year.

Bar chart comparing Anthropic's up-to-$7,000 headline (5 × $100 × 12 for Team plus a $1,000 credit) with the $7,500 monthly-billed list price for five Premium seats

The $45,000 Startup Stack figure is the combined maximum of every partner offer "at partner list prices as of September 2026," and Anthropic's own footnote adds that "your company may not be able to receive or combine all offers." Examples on the page in October 2026 include $5K in ClickHouse Cloud credits, 12 months of ElevenLabs free plus 33M characters, six months of Hex Enterprise, and three months of Granola Business for up to 10 seats. Partners can change or pull offers at any time, so count only the ones your company would pay for anyway.

Press headlines that say "$50,000+" or "$52,000" simply add the two ceilings together.

Who qualifies: founded in 5 years or funded in 2, no VC required

The official rule is one line: "Startups founded in the last 5 years or funded in the last 2." It's either-or. As of October 2026, that means a company founded around October 2021 or later qualifies on age alone, and an older company qualifies if it raised money around October 2024 or later.

Your situationCan you apply?
Bootstrapped, founded two years agoYes. Bootstrapped and pre-seed companies are explicitly included
Founded eight years ago, raised a round last yearYes, through the "funded in the last 2" condition
Founded eight years ago, last funding four years agoNo, neither condition is met
Backed by a VC in Anthropic's partner networkYes, and your VC may also unlock up to $100K in extra API credits
Already on Claude TeamYes, but the free Team year is only for organizations new to Team
Only have a claude.ai chat accountNot yet. You need a Claude Console account
Only have a Gmail or other personal addressNot yet. You need a company email that matches your website's domain

Besides the age or funding test, the application asks for three things: a Claude Console account, a company email on your website's domain, and a short description of what you're building. Anthropic says it reviews every application. Its terms list the factors it weighs as "business traction, investment, and funding, as well as Claude integration and usage," with final eligibility in Anthropic's "sole discretion." Meeting the basic rule gets you in the door. It doesn't guarantee approval.

Where Claude for Startups is not available: region and ownership rules

The Startup Program Official Terms exclude any company "established or operating in" these places, or that plans to make Anthropic's services available to people located there: Belarus, China, Cuba, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Sudan, Syria, Crimea, or the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics. The test covers three things at once: where the company is registered, where it operates, and where its users are. A US-incorporated company that plans to serve users in one of those places is still out.

A second rule sits in Anthropic's Supported Regions Policy: Anthropic "reserves the right to not provide its products or services to entities whose majority direct or indirect ownership is attributable to nations other than those listed." This matters for founders who set up a company in a supported country while most of the ownership traces back to an unsupported one. The policy says Anthropic reserves the right. It doesn't say every such application is rejected, and no outcome is published.

The terms also exclude companies barred by US or other export-control and sanctions law, and Anthropic employees and their immediate families.

How to apply for Claude for Startups in the Claude Console

The official instructions are short: sign in to the Claude Console and fill out the application from the "Apply now" button on the program page. The order of the steps below matters, because the benefits land in whichever organization you apply from.

  1. Choose the Console organization that will run your API usage. The terms say program benefits are "attributed to the account for the company identified in your application." Anthropic's Supplemental Credit Terms add that credits can't be transferred and may only be used by the holder of the account they're tied to. If you have a personal test organization and a company organization, switch to the company one before you open the form.
  2. Sign in with your company-domain email. The Console is Anthropic's developer account for the API, separate from the claude.ai chat app. The email domain should match the website you enter.
  3. Fill in the form. The Chungoose report (see below) describes what the form showed on October 7, 2026: the target organization at the top, then your name and title; company name, website, country, city and industry; founding month and year; funding stage, whether you're funded, and investors (optional); the share of your AI spend that goes to Anthropic, your build plan, and the support you want. Two free-text questions follow: "What are you building on Claude?" and "Where do you want support from Anthropic?" Both have a character limit. A Japanese founder's step-by-step application thread on X, approved the same day, describes the same questions and puts the limit for the "what you build" answer at 50–500 characters, answered in English. Neither company had to upload a pitch deck or any file. Anthropic can change the form at any time.
  4. Watch both your inbox and the Console page. Anthropic says most applications "are decided within minutes; the rest go to a manual review, which usually takes 2–3 business days." The decision goes to the email address on the application, but it doesn't always arrive first. The Japanese founder got no email at first. Reopening the application page showed the organization as verified and each benefit as "Eligible," and the email came later. Another user on X reported getting no email at all and finding a "Claude Startups" entry under the Console's Settings instead.
  5. Answer any follow-up within 14 days. Under the terms, Anthropic may ask a selected company to sign an affidavit of compliance plus a publicity and liability release. If you don't return it within 14 calendar days, you can lose the benefits. Accepting also lets Anthropic name your company and show your logo as a program member.

What one approved company wrote in the two free-text answers

Korean B2B invoicing company Chungoose published its own application, approval and checkout screens on October 8, 2026. It's a single company's experience, and the publisher also uses the post to promote its own software. Still, it's the most detailed public record of the process.

For "What are you building on Claude?" they answered in this order: who the customers are, which job the product does for them, and what Claude will handle. Features they hadn't built yet were described as plans, not as things already running, and they mentioned where humans review consequential actions. For "Where do you want support from Anthropic?" they named concrete technical problems: Korean-language document understanding, structured extraction, tool use, evaluations, latency and cost. They didn't just ask for credits. They also had to trim the answer to fit the character limit, and said one focused use case works better than a list of ideas.

The company itself notes that it can't say this wording is why it was approved. It's a reasonable template, not a formula.

After approval: claim the Team year and the $1,000 credit separately

Approval doesn't switch anything on by itself. Anthropic's FAQ says you'll get an email with a link to the Claude Startups page in the Claude Console, and you claim the Team offer and the API credits there. In Chungoose's case the email subject was "You're in. Welcome to Claude Startups." with a "Redeem your offers" button. The credit and the Team discount each had to be claimed on their own.

A member's screenshot of the Claude Startups page in the Console, posted on X, shows what you're looking for. The page reads "Your organization is verified," followed by three cards, each with its own button:

  • Claude Team plan: "12 months of Claude Team, up to $625/month off," with "2-seat minimum" and a Claim button
  • Program credits: "$1,000 in API credits" with the line "Credits expire 180 days after they're granted" and a Claim button
  • Applied AI office hours: a "Book a session" button

The footer says that redeeming an offer or booking a session means agreeing to the Startup Program Terms, including the Addendum.

Use this checklist as soon as that page shows your offers, whether or not the email has arrived:

  1. Claim both offers right away and screenshot the "Eligible" state. The same member reported that the offers were eligible to claim but "went missing" when he logged in a few hours later. Another approved founder said the same about offers he hadn't claimed yet. A screenshot of the verified page is your evidence if you need support later.
  2. Claim the API credit on the Claude Startups page, then confirm the balance on the Plans & Billing page of the same Console organization. In the Japanese founder's walkthrough, clicking Claim opened a short form, and the credit was granted 1–2 business days after submitting it. Both the program page ("expire six months after they're granted") and the Console card ("180 days after they're granted") tie the clock to the grant date, not the approval date. Count your six months from the day the balance appears. The Japanese founder suggests claiming the credit only when you're ready to use it. Given the reports of unclaimed offers disappearing, losing part of the six months is the smaller risk.
  3. Claim the Team offer and check the seat setup before you pay. The Japanese founder entered the company name and URL, then reached checkout. In Chungoose's checkout, the seat screen opened with two Standard seats by default. They changed it to five Premium seats and zero Standard seats. Only then did the $625 subtotal and the −$625 promotional discount cancel out to a $0 total. If you leave the default, you use a fraction of the offer. The Console card's "2-seat minimum" matches the Team plan's "2 to 150" range on the pricing page, so a solo founder still sets up at least two seats.
  4. Decide what happens to your personal Pro or Max plan before you upgrade. Anthropic's Claude Team plan getting-started article says an in-place upgrade cancels your individual Pro or Max subscription automatically, with a prorated refund issued about 24 hours after the Team payment goes through. To keep the personal plan, tick "Keep your personal account separate," which creates a separate Team organization. Content moved into a Team organization can't be moved back. One founder reported on X that his $100 Max 5x plan was canceled shortly after he paid for it on October 7, when he switched his account to Team to claim the offer. The help article doesn't say how the refund works when the Team payment is $0.
  5. Expect to enter a card. Even at $0, both Chungoose and the Japanese founder had to enter card details to confirm the subscription.
  6. Don't add seats beyond the offer by accident. Anthropic's help article "How is my Team plan bill calculated?" says adding members or upgrading seats on Team is "charged the prorated amount immediately," and removing members gives no immediate credit or refund.
  7. Put the renewal date in your calendar. The same checkout stated that the plan renews automatically after 12 months at the regular price: $625 per month plus tax for five monthly-billed Premium seats. Decide before that date whether to keep, shrink or cancel seats.
  8. Redeem Startup Stack offers in the Console. Each offer comes with a code, can be used once per member unless the partner says otherwise, and can't be shared outside your company. The Addendum also forbids forwarding or publishing offer codes and links, so direct offer links passed around on social media aren't yours to use. The partner's terms govern the offer, and Anthropic doesn't guarantee it.
  9. Register for office hours using the link sent by email and shown in the Claude Startups portal.

Checklist after approval, starting from the Claude Startups page in the Console: claim the $1,000 credit, set five Premium and zero Standard seats (two-seat minimum) so the Team checkout totals $0, expect to enter a card, and note the renewal at $625 per month

On Claude Team generally, the Claude usage limits by plan guide explains what Standard and Premium seats allow. Premium seats give five times the usage of Standard seats. That doesn't make each one a Claude Max 5x account.

Claude for Startups problems: symptom, cause, and next step

Anthropic publishes no list of decline reasons, no appeal process, and no waiting period for applying again. Its terms call its decisions "final and binding." Launch-week reports on X show what that looks like in practice. Applicants posted that they were rejected within two minutes with no reason given, or within seconds "despite meeting all the requirements." One team said it had spent $500+ on the Claude API and Max plans, with 60–70% of its API usage on Claude, and was still rejected. Another user called the automated rejection "full of false positives". Fast declines fit Anthropic's own note that most applications are decided within minutes. Being a paying Claude customer doesn't guarantee approval, and the decline email doesn't tell you which rule you missed.

The table below maps the problems founders run into to the documented rule behind each one, plus the claim problems approved members reported in launch week.

SymptomMost likely causeWhat to do

Applying again from a corrected setup is the only option the public pages leave open, and nothing guarantees a different result

One user's report needs context because it spread as a warning. An X user posted that Anthropic suspended his Claude account right after he applied, and a Chinese-language repost framed it as a reason not to apply. It's a single case, and nothing in it shows the application caused the suspension. The Safeguards email he shared cites automated Usage Policy signals and doesn't mention the program, and he said it was the fourth time his account had been suspended. If your account is suspended, the email points to an appeal you file by logging in to claude.ai.

Monthly API credits on Team plans are the remaining open question. Since October 7, 2026, Anthropic has been rolling out pooled monthly API credits for Team plans: $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, capped at $500 a month and claimed after seven days on the plan by linking a Console organization (Anthropic's help article on monthly API credits for Max and Team plans). The article says the credits are "available on Max and Team plans, including discounted Team plans," names the Nonprofit and Scientists programs as examples, requires a plan that is active and in good standing, and needs no payment method. It doesn't name Claude Startups. A Team year claimed on October 6–8 reaches seven days around October 13–15, and no member had reported claiming these credits as of October 8, 2026. After seven days, look under Organization settings > Billing. Don't plan your budget around those credits until they show up.

Is Claude for Startups worth applying for with only $1,000 in credits?

A popular comment on the r/ClaudeAI announcement thread put the doubt plainly: "$1000 free API credits seems like a few days of free Claude use." For a team that runs agents all day, that may be true. How far $1,000 goes depends on the model, prompt length and traffic. No fixed answer exists, and you can see your own burn rate in the Console after the first week.

Here's a better way to size the offer:

  • If your company would pay for Claude Team anyway, the free year is the main value. At list prices it's $6,000 (billed annually) to $7,500 (billed monthly) for five Premium seats. The $1,000 credit is a bonus.
  • If you build on the API but don't need Team, the $1,000 is a six-month runway for prototypes and evals, plus higher rate limits. It's useful, but it's a one-time credit, not a budget.
  • If you're thinking of dropping a personal Pro or Max subscription, keep in mind that the Team seats belong to a company organization with a renewal date. Upgrading your personal organization in place cancels Pro or Max automatically with a prorated refund. Ticking "Keep your personal account separate" keeps both, and you pay for the personal plan as before.
  • If you're backed by a partner VC, the up-to-$100K add-on through your investor changes the math far more than anything in the standard package.

The application costs nothing but a few minutes, so the real costs are the card on file, the auto-renewal date, and agreeing to be listed publicly as a member.

If you don't qualify for Claude for Startups

If your company is too old with no recent funding, or you're a solo builder without a company domain, there are cheaper paths that don't need an application. Students should check the Claude student discount guide for current education programs. For individual plans, see Claude Code discounts in 2026 for what's currently live. When your startup credit runs out or expires, the Claude API key guide covers getting a key and buying credits directly from Anthropic.

Claude for Startups FAQ

Is Claude free for startups?

Partly, and only after approval. Approved startups that are new to Claude Team get one year of Team free for up to five Premium seats, plus a one-time $1,000 API credit. After 12 months, Team renews at the normal price, and API usage beyond the credit is billed normally.

Do I need VC funding to join the Claude startup program?

No. Anthropic's FAQ says the program is open to bootstrapped, pre-seed and venture-backed startups. VC backing matters only if your investor is in Anthropic's partner network, which can unlock up to $100K in extra API credits through that VC.

Is there a separate Claude Code startup program?

The program page lists no separate Claude Code program. Claude Code is included in every paid Claude plan, Team included, so the free Team year gives your Premium seat holders Claude Code under their seat limits. API credits from the program apply to the Claude API through the Console.

Can I use Claude startup credits on AWS Bedrock or Google Vertex AI?

No. Anthropic's FAQ says Claude Startups credits apply only to the first-party Claude API through the Claude Console. They can't be used on AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI or other third-party platforms.

What happens when the free year of Claude Team ends?

The subscription renews automatically at the regular price for the seats you configured. For five monthly-billed Premium seats, Chungoose's checkout showed $625 per month plus tax. Change the seat count or cancel before the renewal date if you don't want to be charged.

Does the Claude Startups Team offer cancel my personal Max plan?

Only if you upgrade your personal organization in place. Anthropic's Team getting-started article says an in-place upgrade cancels an individual Pro or Max plan automatically, with a prorated refund about 24 hours after the Team payment. Ticking "Keep your personal account separate" keeps the personal plan and creates a separate Team organization.

Can a solo founder use the free Claude Team year?

Yes, but the Console card for the offer says "2-seat minimum," in line with Team being sold for teams of 2 to 150. Set up at least two seats. Up to five Premium seats are covered by the offer.

I joined the Claude Startups program earlier in 2026. Do I need to reapply?

No. Anthropic says existing members are eligible to redeem the new offers in the Console without reapplying.
