Claude Pro Free Trial: What's Real and Who Qualifies

No. As of September 23, 2026, Claude Pro has no standing free trial that any new account can start. Claude Free costs $0 in supported locations. Pro is paid from the first day: $20 a month, or $200 billed up front for a year, on the US web checkout before tax. The "Try Claude" button on every plan card opens signup, and the "No commitment · Cancel anytime" line on claude.ai describes monthly billing you can cancel, not a free period.

Free access to Pro-level features does exist, but it depends on who you are or who invites you, not on a code you find online. Claude's Pro plan help page says Anthropic occasionally runs limited-time promotions and that its support team cannot issue one-off discounts or coupons. A Guest Pass from a current subscriber, a paid gift, and a few identity-verified programs cover the rest. Several of those programs give you a plan that isn't Pro at all.

Every option below assumes you are physically in a supported location. Paid plans require it, and creating an account requires a phone number from a supported location.

Options that depend on your own account

Five options are open to ordinary personal accounts. Whether one of them costs you nothing is decided by your own signed-in checkout, not by a post, a video, or a screenshot.

What "not available for your account" means

Claude's promotion eligibility page says coupons and promotions are generally only for people trying a paid plan for the first time. The error "This promotion is not available for your account" means the account is a current paid subscriber or has been one before.

The same page says App Store subscribers on iOS or Android can't use promotions at this time. If you subscribed inside the mobile app, the only documented path to a promotion is to cancel there, let the current term end, and subscribe again on the web.

Promotions are announced through Anthropic's own channels, such as its social accounts and newsletter. Support will not generate a code on request, so a code that reaches you any other way needs the checkout test below before you trust it.

Guest Pass: the part no official page explains

A Guest Pass is an invitation that a paying subscriber sends to someone else. The mechanism is real. The Claude Code changelog for version 2.1.236 fixes a bug involving a cached "guest-pass reward." Anthropic's help center has no public page on what the recipient gets, what it costs, or how it renews.

The published details come from third-party guides, and they disagree:

• GamsGo says Max subscribers create passes with the /passes command in Claude Code, that each Max user gets three, and that activating one "typically requires a credit card on file."
• OpenTheRank says eligible Pro and Max members can send them, that the recipient registers a card for a $0 authorization, and that the sender earns $10 in usage credits if the friend later pays.
• AI Hacks describes seven-day passes from Max users that need no credit card.

They agree on seven days of Pro, and two of them say the pass works only on accounts that have never paid. The card requirement, who can send a pass, and the sender reward are not settled by any Anthropic page. So the recipient checkout is the only record that counts: the plan it names, the amount due today, the date the free period ends, and the price that follows. Passes are also resold on secondhand marketplaces. A pass you paid a stranger for is not free Pro, and a real link can still be used up or rejected for your account.

A gift is paid access in someone else's name

Claude's gift subscription is sold by Anthropic. Most Pro and Max subscribers can buy one; Free users and Team or Enterprise members can't. The buyer picks Pro, Max 5x, or Max 20x for 1, 3, 6, or 12 months, and the gift expires 365 days after purchase. You redeem it at claude.ai/gift/redeem without a card, and you can't stack two gifts at once. It costs you nothing because someone else paid, which makes it a present, not a trial.

Programs that verify who you are

These programs give real no-cost access, but only after Anthropic or your institution confirms your role. Read the "What you get" column first: none of them is a Pro subscription. The teacher plan has Pro-level features on a Team-based plan, the lab plan uses Team seats, and the open-source program gives you Max 20x.

US K-12 teachers

Claude for Teachers covers classroom teachers, instructional coaches, specialists, interventionists, librarians, counselors, and other certificated staff in US K-12 schools and districts. You verify with a school email, and your account moves onto what the program terms call "a free Claude for Teams plan for verified educators." Usage limits are higher than a standard free account. Some Team features are switched off, including billing, seat purchasing, usage credits, and premium seats, so you can't buy extra usage on this plan. Schools and districts can instead set up a free Claude Enterprise organization for all their staff.

It is not a Pro subscription, it is not open to students, and it doesn't extend to educators outside the US.

Principal investigators and their labs

The Claude Team plan for scientists, announced August 27, 2026, opened 10,000 seats for one year, and Anthropic says it intends to extend the program beyond that. A principal investigator or equivalent at an academic or nonprofit research institution completes the verification form, then adds the researchers in the lab. A graduate student or postdoc can't enroll alone; ask your PI. Labs that outgrow their seats can apply to the AI for Science program for up to $50,000 in credits per project.

Open-source maintainers

Claude for Open Source grants six months of Max 20x. You qualify through any one of these:

1. Packages that others depend on: 500 or more dependent repos, 100 or more dependent packages, or 200,000 or more combined monthly downloads across registries such as npm, PyPI, or crates.io.
2. A listed committer or maintainer role on a recognized foundation or language project, such as CPython, the Node.js TSC, an Apache PMC, CNCF, or the Linux kernel.
3. 100 or more pull requests merged into repos you don't own in the last 12 months.
4. A repo with 20 or more unique external contributors whose pull requests were merged in the last 12 months.
5. A repo you maintain with an OpenSSF criticality score of 0.4 or higher.

If you already pay for Pro, it resumes at the end of the six months at your old rate. Set a reminder if you don't want that charge. If Max 20x changes how you work, the comparison of Claude Pro and Max helps you decide which plan to keep paying for afterward.

University students

Claude for Education accounts come from the university, not from Anthropic's consumer checkout. There is no public list of participating schools, and a school email address on its own doesn't unlock anything. If your school takes part, you sign in with your university email. A personal account under the same address stays separate, and its chats aren't moved over automatically. Claude Campus is not a free Pro option. It pays selected student leaders a $3,600 cash stipend to run clubs or workshops, and its page lists no Pro subscription. The program is closed for Fall 2026.

Check the checkout before you accept any offer

A real offer shows its full terms before you confirm. Go through this list on the page itself, and take a screenshot before you click:

1. The page is on claude.ai, claude.com, or anthropic.com, or on your school's or district's sign-in page. A look-alike domain asking for card details is phishing, whatever it promises.
2. The plan is named: Pro, Max 5x, Max 20x, an educator plan, or a Team seat.
3. The amount due today is shown, whether it's $0 or a number.
4. The date the free or discounted period ends is shown.
5. The first renewal price and date are shown.
6. You know where you'd cancel: Settings > Billing on the web or desktop app, or the App Store or Google Play flow if you subscribe inside a mobile app.

Stop at the first of these:

• You're outside a supported location, and the only way forward is a VPN, a borrowed phone number, or someone else's account.
• Any item in the list above is missing.
• Someone asks you to pay for a "free" link, pass, or gift.
• Anyone asks for your password, login code, recovery email, or an API key.
• The "Pro account" on offer is a shared login instead of a subscription in your own name.

Standard Pro renews automatically. To avoid the next charge, cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current period, so you keep access until then. Payments are non-refundable unless the Consumer Terms or the law say otherwise. Customers in the EEA and the UK may get a refund within 14 days of purchase, prorated by use. Only Apple can refund a purchase made on iOS.

Claude Code and API credits don't make Pro free

Claude Code is included with Pro and Max and draws on the same subscription usage. If an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is active, Claude Code bills API usage instead. Pro doesn't include API usage through the Claude Console, which is a separate product with its own bill. A CLI install, a cloud credit, or an API key never changes the plan shown in your Claude account.

Start with Free and give it real work: one task you do every day, one long or difficult task, and one task that would justify paying if Claude handles it well. Note where the limits interrupt you. If Free blocks work you value and your checkout shows no promotion, the choice is to wait or to pay for a month on purpose. The only public lower price is annual billing: $200 up front, against 12 × $20 = $240 for a year of monthly billing. That saves $40.
