Nano Banana 2.1 Leaks and Status: No API Yet, How It Compares
As of October 6, 2026, Google hasn't announced Nano Banana 2.1. It showed up in Google Flow for some users, then reportedly vanished. No API or price exists.
On this page

As of October 6, 2026, Nano Banana 2.1 is not an announced Google model. It is a name that first appeared as a label in the Google Flow web build on September 27, 2026, and on October 5–6 several users and the news account TestingCatalog reported that it had become selectable in Flow. Within hours, forum users said it had been pulled again. Google has published no blog post, model ID, price, rate limit or API access for it, and the public Arena image leaderboard has no 2.1 entry.
That leaves a practical answer for most readers. If you build anything on an API, plan costs, or need a model that will still be there tomorrow, use a released model today: Nano Banana 2 (gemini-3.1-flash-image) as the low-cost Google default, Nano Banana Pro for Google's high-fidelity tier, or GPT Image 2.5, which holds the top two spots on Arena's text-to-image board as of October 6. A third-party site that sells "Nano Banana 2.1" access cannot show that it routes to a Google 2.1 model, because Google has not published one.
Every status line below carries a date and the kind of evidence behind it: official (a Google, OpenAI or ByteDance page), reported (a named outlet or account), user report (an individual forum or social post), or direct check (one account, one moment). Where a sentence is reasoning rather than evidence, it says so.
Is Nano Banana 2.1 out? Status as of October 6, 2026
No, not as a public release. Here is what each kind of evidence supports as of October 6, 2026.
| Question | Answer | Evidence type | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Has Google announced Nano Banana 2.1? | No announcement, blog post or model card | Official (absence) | Gemini API models page, Gemini API changelog |
| Is there an API model ID or price? | No. The models page lists four Nano Banana models: 2, 2 Lite, Pro and the legacy original | Official (absence) | Gemini API models page, Gemini API pricing page |
| Is it in Google AI Studio? | No. The Nano Banana page lists only Nano Banana 2 Lite, Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro | Official (absence) | Google AI Studio Nano Banana page |
| Did the name appear in Google's code? | Yes, as a label in the Flow web build, replacing an earlier "Nano Banana 2.5 Flash" label | Reported | TestingCatalog, September 27, 2026 |
| Did users get it in Google Flow? | Several reported it as selectable on October 5–6 | Reported and user reports | TestingCatalog on Threads, Reddit post titles, linux.do topic "Nano Banana 2.1 来了" |
| Is it still in Flow? | Forum users said it was withdrawn by about 02:00 UTC on October 6; one Flow account at 01:48 UTC showed no 2.1 option | User reports and direct check | linux.do topic; direct check described below |
| Is it in the Gemini app? | One forum user claimed so; Google's Gemini image page still describes Nano Banana 2 | User report (unverified) | Gemini app image generation page |
| Is it on Arena? | No 2.1 entry and no entry for the anonymous "spicy-mayo" model | Official board data | Arena text-to-image leaderboard |
The absence of 2.1 on Google's pages is a fact for October 6, 2026 only. Google can add a model to these pages on launch day, so the official rows are the ones to recheck first.
Nano Banana 2.1 timeline: from a "2.5 Flash" label to a Flow sighting
The name moved through three stages in two weeks: an anonymous test model, a label in code, and a short appearance in a live product.

| Date (UTC) | What happened | Who says so | Evidence type |
|---|---|---|---|
| From September 9, 2026 | Testers on Image Arena report an anonymous Google model codenamed "spicy-mayo"; some call it Nano Banana 2.5 | Arena testers on X, for example synthwavedd's post | User reports |
| September 24, 2026 | "Nano Banana 2.5 Flash" traces spotted in the Google Flow web build | TestingCatalog (one screenshot, no specs) | Reported |
| September 27, 2026 | The same Flow label now reads "Nano Banana 2.1" | TestingCatalog | Reported |
| September 29, 2026 | Not available in Gemini, AI Studio, Flow or the Gemini API | PicLumen's status post | Reported |
| October 5, 2026, 21:35 | A linux.do user posts a Flow model picker showing 2.1 and says Flow rolled it out to everyone | linux.do topic | User report |
| October 5, 2026 | Reddit posts titled "Nano Banana 2.1 is rolling out now." (r/GeminiAI) and "Nano Banana 2.1 Just appeared" (r/GoogleFlow) | Reddit users | User reports (titles only) |
| October 6, 2026, early UTC | TestingCatalog: 2.1 "appears to be available on Google Flow right now", but output "seems similar to what Nano Banana Pro generates" | TestingCatalog on Threads | Reported |
| October 6, 2026, 01:42–02:26 | linux.do users: two accounts never got it; "2.1 has been withdrawn"; "Flow has lost it, try Gemini" | linux.do topic | User reports |
| October 6, 2026, 01:48 | One signed-in Flow account (browser located in Taiwan, plan tier not recorded) offers only Nano Banana Pro, Nano Banana 2 Lite and Nano Banana 2, with Nano Banana 2 as default | Direct check of one account | Direct check |
The direct check proves only what that one account saw at that moment. Other accounts or regions may have seen something different, but it matches the forum reports of a rollback.
TestingCatalog reads the move from "2.5 Flash" to "2.1" as a sign of a smaller, iterative update to Nano Banana 2 rather than a big jump, and notes that Google has said nothing about what would change. That is an interpretation. A label in a web build shows that engineers wired up a name, not that the model will ship under it.
What early users say about Nano Banana 2.1 image quality
None of the claims below come with test settings, sample sizes or measurements. Treat them as first impressions from the few hours the option was visible.
- Looks like Pro. TestingCatalog said the output seemed similar to Nano Banana Pro, so it was unclear whether Flow was routing requests to a new model at all.
- Faster, better text. X users @thtbee_ and @astropol0 said it follows prompts well and is "as much as 2x faster than GPT Image 2.5". @astropol0 added that text and capitalization looked cleaner than in Nano Banana 2 and Pro. Neither post shows timing data.
- Not better than GPT Image. X user @notjazii said it was "not as good as gpt images"; @Angaisb_ called it "another non-Pro image model".
- Mixed side-by-side prompts. linux.do users ran single prompts against GPT Image 2.5: an anime character, a movie poster, and a Rubik's cube in front of a mirror, which both models got wrong. Opinions split between "a decent improvement", "about the same as 2.0", and "still need to reroll; the first image was broken".
Until Google publishes the model and independent tests run fixed prompt sets with disclosed settings, nobody can say whether 2.1 beats Nano Banana 2, Pro or GPT Image 2.5.
Is Nano Banana 2.1 the same model as Nano Banana 2.5 or spicy-mayo?
Nobody has confirmed it. The only documented link is TestingCatalog's report that the Flow label changed from "Nano Banana 2.5 Flash" to "Nano Banana 2.1". The idea that the anonymous Arena model "spicy-mayo" is the same model rests on its condiment codename and testers' impressions. Aggregator posts from mid-September also claimed partners could test a nano-banana-2.5 model on Vertex AI, without showing any documents.
Google's last image leak shows why leaked names are weak evidence. TestingCatalog found "Nano Banana 2 Flash", codenamed Mayo, in December 2025, according to ProgressiveRobot's summary of the leak history. Google then switched to a newer model and launched it on February 26, 2026 as Nano Banana 2, which is Gemini 3.1 Flash Image. Both the leaked name and the model changed before launch.
One more name to keep apart: Qwen-Image-2.1 is a different model from a different company. It is Alibaba's open-weights image model released in mid-September 2026, ranked #18 on Arena as qwen-image-2.1, and you can run Qwen-Image-2.1 locally. Posts about it often appear next to Nano Banana 2.1 posts only because of the shared version number.
Can you use Nano Banana 2.1 today in Flow, Gemini or the API?
For most people, no, as of October 6, 2026. Each Google surface is in a different state.
- Google Flow (flow.google.com) is the only place with credible reports of 2.1 being selectable, and those reports say it disappeared within hours. If your model menu shows Nano Banana Pro, Nano Banana 2 Lite and Nano Banana 2 only, that matches the state reported after the rollback.
- Gemini app: a single forum user said 2.1 appeared there after leaving Flow. Google's own Gemini image page still presents Nano Banana 2, and nothing official confirms the claim.
- Google AI Studio: lists Nano Banana 2 Lite, Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro only.
- Gemini API and Vertex AI: no model ID, so you cannot call 2.1 from code. Any pipeline you build now has to run on a released model.
If you need a free route while you wait, Google's current no-cost options, including Flow's 50 daily credits, are in Can You Use Nano Banana for Free? Google's No-Cost Options.
Nano Banana 2.1 vs Nano Banana 2, Pro, GPT Image 2.5 and Seedream 5.0 Pro
Nano Banana 2.1 cannot be priced or ranked yet, so every cell in its row reads "not published". The other rows show what you can actually run, using official list prices and Arena's text-to-image board as of October 6, 2026 (Seedream price as of late September 2026).
| Model | API model ID | Official price per image (Standard) | Output sizes | Arena text-to-image (October 6, 2026) | Documented strengths |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nano Banana 2.1 | Not published | Not published | Not published | No entry | Not published; claims above are unverified |
| Nano Banana 2 | gemini-3.1-flash-image | $0.045 (0.5K), $0.067 (1K), $0.101 (2K), $0.151 (4K) | 0.5K–4K | #10, score 1261 | Grounding with Google Search and Google Image Search; keeps up to 5 characters and 14 objects consistent |
| Nano Banana 2 Lite | gemini-3.1-flash-lite-image | $0.0336 per 1K image | Priced per 1K image | #14, score 1250 | Google's cheapest image tier; accepts video input; no grounding |
| Nano Banana Pro | gemini-3-pro-image | $0.134 (1K or 2K), $0.24 (4K) | 1K, 2K, 4K | #15 (2K), score 1248 | Grounding with Google Search; Google positions it for high-fidelity work that needs factual accuracy |
| GPT Image 2.5 (Sunburst, Flare) | gpt-image-2.5-sunburst, gpt-image-2.5-flare | $30 per 1M image output tokens; OpenAI estimates $0.0059 (low) to $0.2107 (max) per 1024×1024 image | Up to 3840×2160 or 2880×2880 | Sunburst #1 (1425), Flare #2 (1397), both preliminary | Highest blind-vote preference on Arena |
| Seedream 5.0 Pro (ByteDance) | Via BytePlus ModelArk | $0.045 up to 2.61 MP, $0.09 above | Two price bands split at 2.61 MP | #11, score 1256 | Statistically tied with Nano Banana 2 on Arena |
How to read this table:
- Prices come from the Gemini API pricing page, OpenAI's API pricing page and BytePlus ModelArk pricing. They cover image output only; input tokens are billed on top. Google's Batch mode halves the Gemini prices, for example about $0.034 per 1K image on Nano Banana 2. OpenAI's per-image figures are its own calculator estimates, not invoices.
- Arena ranks are blind pairwise votes on single images. They say nothing about cost, speed or editing accuracy. Nano Banana 2, Seedream 5.0 Pro, Nano Banana 2 Lite and Nano Banana Pro sit at ranks 10–15 with overlapping confidence ranges, so the board does not show one of them beating another. Midjourney is not on the board.
- The original Nano Banana (
gemini-2.5-flash-image, $0.039 per image) has an October 2, 2026 shutdown date on Google's Gemini API deprecations page. Google's Gemini API image generation guide "strongly recommend[s]" moving it to Nano Banana 2 Lite; Nano Banana 2 is the step up when you need images larger than 1K or grounding. If your code still calls the original model, migrate now rather than waiting for 2.1.
Where would 2.1 slot in? The label history ("2.5 Flash", then "2.1") points to an update of the Nano Banana 2 Flash tier, not a new Pro model. That is an inference that TestingCatalog shares, and TestingCatalog's own remark that the output looked Pro-like cuts against it. Expect its price and features to stay unknown until Google publishes a pricing row.
Which image model to use now while Nano Banana 2.1 is unreleased
Pick by the job you have today. If 2.1 ships as a Flash-tier update, the Nano Banana 2 choices below are the ones most likely to change.
- You need Google images in volume at the lowest price: Nano Banana 2 Lite at $0.0336 per 1K image, or Nano Banana 2 at $0.045 per 0.5K image. Use Batch if results can wait.
- You need search-grounded images, many reference objects, or 4K at a mid-range price: Nano Banana 2. It is the only Google tier with Google Image Search grounding, and its 4K output costs $0.151 against $0.24 on Pro. See the Nano Banana 2 API pricing guide for the full cost by size.
- You need Google's high-fidelity tier for factual or text-heavy images: Nano Banana Pro. For the choice among Google's three tiers, see Nano Banana 2 Lite vs 2 vs Pro: Pick the Right Route.
- You want the model voters prefer most, or edits that must keep a product's shape: GPT Image 2.5. The per-job trade-offs are in Nano Banana Pro vs GPT Image 2.5: Which to Run First for Each Job.
- You want a non-Google option priced like Nano Banana 2: Seedream 5.0 Pro at $0.045 up to 2.61 MP. Compare it in Nano Banana Pro vs Seedream 5.0 Pro: Which to Run First.
- You only want to try 2.1 the day it lands: keep using Nano Banana 2 in Flow and save the prompts that define your style. You can rerun them on 2.1 and compare results against a known baseline.
If you need several of these models behind one key, LaoZhang API lists Nano Banana 2 at $0.055 per call, Nano Banana Pro at $0.09 and Nano Banana 2 Lite at $0.025 as of October 6, 2026, alongside GPT Image 2.5 and Seedream. Confirm prices in its console before you commit. It does not offer Nano Banana 2.1, and no provider can until Google publishes the model.
How to check a "Nano Banana 2.1" generator site before you pay
Several sites already sell "Nano Banana 2.1", including an OpenArt model page, nanobanana.io and a nanobananaweb.com "preview" page. Because Google exposes no 2.1 model ID, none of them can show that your request reaches a Google 2.1 model. That does not mean they are dishonest. It means you have no way to verify the label.
Run through these checks before paying:
- Ask which model ID the site calls. Google's public IDs are
gemini-3.1-flash-image,gemini-3.1-flash-lite-imageandgemini-3-pro-image. A site that names one of these is selling a released model under a new label. - Compare the feature list with Nano Banana 2's published specs. OpenArt's page promises up to 14 reference images and 4K output, which matches what Google already documents for Nano Banana 2.
- Read the site's own fine print. The nanobananaweb.com page states that Google has not announced or released a model under the 2.1 name while still showing a paid generate button.
- Avoid annual plans bought for 2.1 alone. If the real model ships with different behavior, you will have prepaid for a label.
- Test one prompt against Nano Banana 2. If you cannot tell the outputs apart, the price difference should decide.
Signals that will confirm the Nano Banana 2.1 launch
A real launch leaves official traces that a leak does not. Any one of these would move 2.1 from rumor to release:
- A post on Google's blog, The Keyword, or from Google DeepMind naming the model.
- A new model ID on the Gemini API models page or an entry in the Gemini API changelog.
- A pricing row on the Gemini API pricing page.
- A new row on the Google AI Studio Nano Banana page.
- A Google-named entry on the Arena text-to-image leaderboard.
- A Flow or Gemini model-menu option that stays for all accounts instead of appearing and vanishing within hours.

Until one of these appears, assume the name, the tier and the release date can all still change, as they did with the Mayo leak that became Nano Banana 2.
Nano Banana 2.1 FAQ: release date, price and API
When will Nano Banana 2.1 be released?
Google has not given a date as of October 6, 2026. The short-lived Flow appearance on October 5–6 suggests testing is under way, but a staged test that was pulled within hours is not a launch.
Is Nano Banana 2.1 free?
Unknown, since Google has published no pricing or plan details for 2.1. Google already offers released Nano Banana models at no cost in the Gemini app and Google Flow, within daily or usage limits; see Can You Use Nano Banana for Free? Google's No-Cost Options.
Does Nano Banana 2.1 have an API?
No. As of October 6, 2026 the Gemini API lists no 2.1 model ID, so neither Google nor a reseller can offer verified API access. Build on gemini-3.1-flash-image or another released model.
Is Nano Banana 2.1 better than GPT Image 2.5?
There is no measured answer. Some X users say 2.1 is faster and handles text more cleanly; others say GPT Image 2.5 is still better, and forum side-by-sides were single prompts. On Arena as of October 6, 2026, GPT Image 2.5 ranks first and second, while 2.1 has no entry.
