Gemini 4 Argon Usage Limits: Pro vs Ultra, Resets, API Credits
Google AI Pro gets Gemini 4 Argon in the Gemini app and AI Mode; Ultra adds Antigravity and AI Studio quota. App limits reset every 5 hours up to a weekly cap.
On this page

Gemini 4 Argon opened to subscribers on October 13, 2026, but not on the same terms everywhere. Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month) gets it in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search. Google AI Ultra ($99.99 or $199.99 a month) also gets it in Google Antigravity and in AI Studio's plan quota. Anyone with paid Gemini API billing can call it by the token, and both Pro and Ultra include a monthly API credit that pays for those calls.
Google hasn't published how many Argon prompts any plan gets, as of October 14, 2026. It publishes the shape of the limit instead: Gemini app usage is compute-based and "refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit," Pro gets 4x the free plan's limits, and Ultra gets 5x or 20x Pro's, depending on the tier. Pro subscribers on Reddit report that one Argon prompt takes about 10% of a five-hour window. When you run out in the app, you can keep the conversation going on Flash-Lite or wait for the refresh time the app shows.
If the app limit is too tight, the monthly API credit is the cheapest extra capacity. In a 12-call test on October 14, a typical short task with high thinking cost about $0.016 at Google's list price. Pro's $10 credit covers roughly 610 such calls through November 30 and about 305 after the price doubles on December 1.
Where Pro and Ultra can use Gemini 4 Argon, surface by surface
Each Google surface meters Argon in its own way, and Pro and Ultra get different access on each. The table pulls together Google's Gemini 4 Argon availability announcement, the US Google AI plans page, Antigravity's models page and the Google AI plans page in the Gemini API docs, as of October 14, 2026. Prices are US monthly list prices.
| Surface | Free or AI Plus | AI Pro, $19.99 | AI Ultra, $99.99 or $199.99 | How Argon use is counted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini app | No Argon | Yes, 4x the free plan's limits | Yes, 5x or 20x Pro's limits | Compute-based; refreshes every 5 hours until the weekly limit; Flash-Lite takes over at the limit |
| AI Mode in Search | No Argon | "Higher access" | "Highest access" | No published count |
| Antigravity app, CLI and IDE extensions | No Argon | No Argon | Yes | Five-hour and weekly meters; optional AI credit overage |
| AI Studio, plan quota in the web UI | No Argon | No Argon | Yes, "highest quota" | Daily baseline quota included in the plan |
| Gemini API paid tier, including AI Studio with billing | Yes, pay per token | Yes, $10 monthly credit | Yes, $40 or $100 monthly credit | $2 input / $10 output per 1M tokens through Nov 30, then $4 / $20 |
Three points in that table change what you should do:
- AI Plus has no Argon. The "Includes Gemini 4 Argon" badge on the plans page sits on the Pro and Ultra cards only.
- Antigravity is the clearest Ultra-only surface. Pro keeps Antigravity for other models, but Argon isn't on its list there.
- The API is open to every plan, including no plan at all, as long as billing is on. The free tier of the API has no Argon on any line of the Gemini API pricing page.
Work accounts are a separate track: the Google Cloud announcement says Argon is available in Gemini for business on the web, desktop and mobile. The consumer limits below don't describe those accounts.
Is Argon only available on the Ultra plan? Not in the Gemini app
No. Pro subscribers get Argon in the Gemini app and AI Mode. The "Ultra only" statements come from two other surfaces. Antigravity's models page marks Argon unavailable for Google AI Pro. The AI Studio plan documentation says "Gemini 4 Argon is not available on the Free or Google AI Pro plans," and the API pricing page repeats that line. Both refer to the plan quota inside AI Studio and the API's free tier, not to the Gemini app.
So if you're on Pro and see a message saying Argon is currently available to the Ultra plan, you're most likely in Antigravity or in AI Studio without billing turned on. AI Studio has a way around it: paid billing, which Pro's $10 monthly credit can cover (steps further down). Antigravity has no Pro route.
If Argon is missing from the Gemini app's model picker, the rollout may not have reached your account. The Gemini app release notes for October 13 describe Argon as "rolling out globally for Google AI Pro & Ultra subscribers." One Reddit thread announced it as available for Pro users "on the web," which suggests the web app may get it first, but Google hasn't said whether the mobile apps follow later.
How many Argon prompts Pro gets: no official count, about 10 reported
Google publishes multipliers, not prompt counts. The Gemini Apps limits help page lists standard limits without a plan, 2x for AI Plus, 4x for AI Pro, and "5x or 20x higher than AI Pro limits depending on your subscription" for Ultra. The page doesn't mention Argon. No Argon prompt count appears on Google's help center or plans page, or in posts from the Gemini app, AI Studio, Antigravity or Google DeepMind accounts on X, as of October 14, 2026.
The limit is compute-based. Google says it depends on prompt complexity, the models and features you use, and how long the chat is. A heavier model uses more of the same allowance, which is why Argon drains it faster than Flash does.
The most concrete figure so far comes from users. In three r/GeminiAI threads from October 13 and 14, Pro subscribers said a single Argon prompt used about 10% of their five-hour limit, "even with simple" prompts in one case. Another poster asked whether that means 20 requests per 5 hours. Google hasn't said. If the 10% figure holds, one Pro window fits roughly 10 Argon prompts, and fewer for long chats or file uploads. That estimate rests on a handful of user reports, not on a Google number. The size of the weekly cap above the five-hour windows is also unpublished, though the Usage Limits page shows how much of it you've used and when your own weekly limit resets.
For Ultra, the same report gives only an arithmetic guess. If Ultra's multipliers apply to Argon the way they apply to overall usage, the prompt that takes 10% of a Pro window would take about 2% of an Ultra $99.99 window (5x) and about 0.5% of an Ultra $199.99 window (20x).
What uses the allowance faster, according to Google's relative-cost table:
- Very low: simple chat.
- Medium: long ongoing conversations, because the model re-reads the history, and large file analysis.
- High: Deep Research and video generation.
Two habits follow from that. Start a new chat when you change topics, which Google itself recommends to save usage. And save Argon for the prompts that need it, using the Flash model for routine follow-ups.
How to see your Gemini usage limits and refresh time
In the Gemini app on the web, open Settings at the bottom left and choose Usage Limits. You can also go straight to gemini.google.com/usage. As of October 14, 2026, the page shows "Current usage" as a percentage with its reset time, and a separate "Weekly limit" with its own percentage and a reset date and time. It notes that advanced models and features can use more of the limit, but it doesn't break usage down by model. The app also warns you when you get close to the limit and again when you reach it, and tells you when it refreshes.
The other surfaces keep their own counters:
- Antigravity: the Settings page shows baseline quota use across models. The models page shows two meters, "Gemini Models" and "Claude and GPT models," each with "Five Hour Limit Remaining" and "Weekly Limit Remaining." Argon has no meter of its own there, so it appears to draw on the Gemini Models meter.
- AI Studio and the API: per-model rate limits are shown in AI Studio rather than printed in the docs, and your credit balance appears at aistudio.google.com/billing.
Gemini 4 Argon in Antigravity: Ultra only, five-hour and weekly meters
Among individual plans, only Ultra gets Argon in Antigravity. Antigravity's Argon announcement also names eligible Gemini Enterprise subscriptions. The models page marks Argon "Not available in Antigravity IDE"; use the Antigravity app, Antigravity CLI or IDE extensions instead.
Ultra's quota there is described without numbers. The Antigravity plans page promises "the highest, most generous quota, refreshed every five hours" and "the highest weekly rate limits." The US plans page splits that further: Ultra at $99.99 gets "higher" rate limits to the agent model and Ultra at $199.99 gets the "highest."
Antigravity limits "correlate with the amount of work done by the agent." An agent run that reads files, edits code and re-runs tests uses far more than a single chat prompt. Early user reports match that. One X user said Argon "blew through 60% of my weekly limit in a few hours", and another hit the five-hour limit after two prompts. Both are single cases with unknown task sizes.
When the baseline runs out, the AI Credit Overages setting decides what happens next:
- Never: Antigravity stops and waits for the baseline to refresh.
- Always: it spends your AI credits once the baseline is exhausted and switches back when the baseline refreshes.
Credits come from purchases or promotions and are "consumed at standard Gemini Enterprise consumption pricing." The Google One page on buying AI credits lists packs of 2,500, 5,000 and 20,000 credits for extra use in Google Flow and Google Antigravity. Pro members can buy credits too, but since Argon isn't on Pro's Antigravity model list, credits don't unlock it there. The Antigravity plans page also rules out bringing your own API key for extra limits, so Pro's API credit can't be used for Argon inside Antigravity either.
When you hit the Argon limit: Flash-Lite, a refresh, or API credit
What you can do depends on which counter ran out:
| Where you ran out | What happens | Your options |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini app, five-hour window | The app shows when the window refreshes | Continue the conversation on Flash-Lite, wait for the refresh, or move Argon-only work to AI Studio on API credit |
| Gemini app, weekly limit | Five-hour refreshes stop helping until the weekly limit resets | Flash-Lite, wait, use API credit, or upgrade to Ultra for 5x or 20x Pro's limits |
| Antigravity baseline, Ultra | Depends on AI Credit Overages | Set it to Always if you have credits; leave it on Never to wait |
| AI Studio plan quota, Ultra | The daily baseline runs out | Turn on prepaid billing and spend the monthly API credit |
| Gemini API | Rate limits apply per project, or the credit runs out | Check the per-model limits in AI Studio; see the Gemini API rate limits guide for tiers and 429 errors |
The Flash-Lite fallback comes straight from Google's help page: "If you have a Google AI subscription and reach your limit, you can continue your conversation with Flash-Lite."
AI credits are the one option to treat with care in the app. The plans page footnote says you can "extend your limits by purchasing AI credits," but Google One's help page on buying credits lists only Google Flow and Google Antigravity, and says nothing about the Gemini app or Argon. Until Google documents how credits apply in the app, don't buy them expecting more Argon prompts in Gemini.

A simple rule for choosing:
- You hit the five-hour window now and then: let Flash-Lite carry routine follow-ups and come back after the refresh.
- You hit the weekly limit often, and mostly want answers rather than agents: use the monthly API credit in AI Studio. It's cheaper than upgrading, as the numbers below show.
- You want Argon to run coding agents in Antigravity: Ultra is the only individual plan that offers it.
What $10 of API credit buys: about 610 Argon calls, 305 from Dec 1
The figures below come from 12 requests sent to gemini-4-argon on October 14, 2026, through LaoZhang API's Gemini-native endpoint. Every response reported modelVersion as gemini-4-argon. Costs are calculated from the token counts in each response at Google's list price, not from a bill. Each prompt ran once, with no rerolls.
Disclosure: laozhang.ai is our own service. Its prices are platform pricing, not an independent comparison.
The prompts covered five everyday tasks: a one-line email subject, a pen-pack word problem, a Python function with 6 pytest tests, a three-turn travel chat turned into a table with a budget, and an 8-bullet summary of an article of about 6,700 words.
Thinking tokens showed up only when the request set thinkingLevel to high. Requests with no thinking setting, and the coding prompt at low and medium, reported no thinking tokens at all. Google's own endpoint wasn't part of the test, so its default may differ. Google also doesn't say which thinking level the Gemini app uses for Argon.
| Task | Input tokens | Thinking tokens at high | Output tokens at high | Cost at high | Cost with no thinking setting |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Email subject line | 53 | 646 | 126 | $0.0078 | $0.0011 |
| Pen-pack word problem | 92 | 1,057 | 279 | $0.0135 | $0.0036 |
| Python function + 6 tests | 91 | 1,343 | 567 | $0.0193 | $0.0052 |
| 3-turn chat to table + budget | 267 | 808 | 766 | $0.0163 | $0.0079 |
| ~6,700-word article summary | 11,102 | 1,461 | 1,199 | $0.0488 | $0.0330 |
The formula is input tokens × $2 per million plus thinking and output tokens × $10 per million, since thinking bills as output. For the summary at high: 11,102 × $2/1M = $0.0222, plus (1,461 + 1,199) × $10/1M = $0.0266, for $0.0488 in total. From December 1 both rates double, so every cost doubles. The word problem came back correct ($41.50 for four 10-packs and three 6-packs). The code looked plausible but wasn't executed.
Planning around the high-thinking costs is the cautious choice. The word problem, coding and chat tasks averaged $0.0164 per call at high. Pro's credit is $10 a month and Ultra's is $40 or $100, depending on the tier (details in the next section). Dividing each credit by the cost per call gives:
| Monthly credit | Short task at high, through Nov 30 | Short task from Dec 1 | 11K-token summary, through Nov 30 | 11K-token summary from Dec 1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $10, AI Pro | ~610 | ~305 | ~205 | ~102 |
| $40, AI Ultra (20 TB) | ~2,440 | ~1,220 | ~820 | ~410 |
| $100, AI Ultra (30 TB) | ~6,100 | ~3,060 | ~2,050 | ~1,020 |

Without thinking tokens, the same three short tasks averaged about $0.0056, which would stretch $10 to roughly 1,800 calls. Treat that as the upper end.
These figures describe single requests. An agent session in Antigravity or a CLI re-sends large contexts and runs many steps per task, so one task can cost far more than one chat call. Google's own AI Studio tutorial warns that deep thinking and multi-file edits use quota quickly. For ordinary single prompts, though, a $10 credit lasts for hundreds of Argon calls, not a handful.
The Gemini app's quota isn't metered in dollars, so this table can't be converted into app prompts.
LaoZhang API lists gemini-4-argon at $2 input and $10 output per million tokens on its model list, with both Gemini-native and OpenAI-compatible endpoints. It has no cache-read price for Argon, so cached input bills at the full $2 rather than Google's $0.10, and it hasn't said whether its price changes on December 1. It doesn't replace a Google plan for app or Antigravity access.
How to use Pro or Ultra API credits for Argon in AI Studio
Google AI Pro includes $10 a month in Google Cloud credits through the Google Developer Program, and Ultra includes $40 or $100 depending on the tier, according to the Developer Program plans page. That page names the Ultra tiers by storage, 20 TB for $40 and 30 TB for $100, while the plans page sells them as $99.99 and $199.99. The 20 TB tier is most likely the $99.99 plan, but confirm the amount on your benefits page. Evan Otero of Google DeepMind put it plainly on launch day: "For Pro subscribers that want to try out Argon, you get $10/month in API credits."
The steps from Google's AI Studio tutorial, Use Your Google AI Plan Credits in AI Studio, updated October 13, 2026:
- Sign in to AI Studio with the same Google account that holds your Pro or Ultra plan.
- Open Billing, choose prepaid billing and deposit at least $5.
- Go to me.developers.google.com/benefits, apply your monthly credit and select the billing account you just set up.
- Refresh aistudio.google.com/billing to confirm the credit, then choose
gemini-4-argon.
The $5 deposit is required before promotional credits apply, but you don't spend it first: credits are used before your prepaid balance. Unused credits carry over and expire on a 12-month rolling basis, so a quiet month isn't wasted. If you'd rather call Argon from your own code, the same account and billing back a Google AI Studio API key.
Rate limits on this route are per project, not per API key. Google prints no requests-per-minute figures for Argon, only the per-model numbers inside AI Studio and a Batch queue limit of 5,000,000 enqueued tokens at Tier 1. A newly billed account starts at Tier 1, with a $250 billing cap. Tier mechanics and 429 handling are covered in the Gemini API rate limits guide.
The prices behind the credit, per million tokens, are $2 input, $10 output including thinking, and $0.10 for cached input through November 30, 2026. From December 1 they become $4, $20 and $0.20. Batch and Flex cost half the Standard rate. Prices for other Gemini models are in Gemini API pricing.
Is Ultra worth it for Gemini 4 Argon? What the extra $80 buys
Ultra at $99.99 costs $80 a month more than Pro. For Argon, that money buys three things:
- Argon in Antigravity and in AI Studio's plan quota, which Pro doesn't get at all.
- 5x Pro's Gemini app limits. The $199.99 tier raises that to 20x.
- A larger monthly API credit, $40 or $100 instead of $10.
If what you want is more Argon answers rather than Antigravity, paying for the API directly costs less. The same $80 at the introductory rate covers about 4,900 short high-thinking calls, or about 2,440 from December 1, using the $0.0164 average from the test. If you mainly chat with Argon and only occasionally hit the five-hour window, Pro plus its $10 credit covers that.
Ultra earns its price when you run Argon as a coding agent in Antigravity, where Pro has no access and agent work burns quota fastest. It also suits people who already lean on the Gemini app all week and keep running into the weekly limit with every model, not just Argon.
Argon's 1M token limit is a context limit, not a usage limit
The "1M token limit" in Google's Argon announcements is about how much a single request can hold, not how much you can use. The Gemini 4 Argon model page lists a context window of 1,048,576 tokens shared between input and output. Maximum output is 65,536 tokens for a default synchronous response and up to 1,048,576 with long decode. Coverage of Google's September 30 announcement described a 1M output limit, up from 64,000. The October 13 wording is a "1M unified input-output token limit via the Gemini API."
In the Gemini app, the help page gives Pro and Ultra a 1 million token context window, compared with 128k on AI Plus and 32k without a plan. That's the window for a conversation, separate from the five-hour and weekly allowances.
How that limit compares with Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol, and what each model costs per task, is covered in Gemini 4 Argon vs Claude Opus 5.5 vs GPT-6.1 Sol: Cost and Access.
Gemini 4 Argon usage limits FAQ
Does the Gemini Pro subscription have a limit on Gemini 4 Argon?
Yes. Argon counts against the Gemini app's compute-based limit, which refreshes every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit. Google hasn't published an Argon prompt count. Pro users report about 10% of a five-hour window per Argon prompt.
Is there a limit of 20 requests per 5 hours for Argon on Gemini Pro?
Google hasn't published any fixed request count for Argon. The user reports of about 10% per prompt point closer to 10 prompts per window than 20, and the real number shifts with prompt length, file uploads and chat history.
How do I avoid hitting Gemini limits when using Argon?
Start a new chat for each new topic, use the Flash model for routine follow-ups, and keep Deep Research and large files away from Argon unless they need it. For extra Argon capacity beyond the app, spend the plan's monthly API credit in AI Studio.
Can I use Gemini 4 Argon for free?
No. The Gemini app needs Pro or Ultra, and the Gemini API's free tier lists Argon as not available. The closest thing to free is the monthly API credit that comes with a paid Pro or Ultra plan, which needs a $5 prepaid deposit first. Scientists can also apply for six months of free access to Antigravity's highest usage tier, according to Google's announcement.
Do AI credits give me more Argon prompts in the Gemini app?
Not as documented today. The plans page mentions extending Gemini app limits with AI credits, but the Google One help page for buying credits covers only Google Flow and Google Antigravity. In Antigravity, Ultra subscribers can spend credits on Argon through the AI Credit Overages setting.
