Yes. ChatGPT keeps an uploaded photo in the chat, and often in Library, until you delete it. Training depends on one setting; deletion finishes within 30 days.

Yes, ChatGPT saves the photos you upload. A picture you attach to a regular chat stays in that conversation until you delete it, and ChatGPT can also keep a separate copy in Library that survives when the chat is gone. On a personal account, that photo can also be used to train OpenAI's models unless you turn off Improve the model for everyone in Settings > Data controls. When you delete something, OpenAI schedules it for permanent deletion within 30 days, with a few stated exceptions.

Where a photo you upload can end up
A single upload can exist in more than one place, and each place has its own lifetime and its own delete button. This is the part most people miss: deleting the chat removes the chat and its shared link, but not the Library copy, Project or GPT files, or copies someone else already saved.

Two conditions add to this map. If memory is on, ChatGPT may use relevant Library files to personalize later answers, so a photo you forgot about can still shape a response. And if you use a custom GPT that calls outside services through actions, whatever the GPT sends to that service falls under the recipient's privacy policy, and the recipient may keep it longer than 30 days.

Is your photo used to train ChatGPT?
On services for individuals, which include Free, Go, Plus and Pro, OpenAI says it "may use your content to train our models," and its image FAQ confirms that images follow the same rules as the rest of your content. That stays true until you opt out. There are two equivalent ways to do it, and you only need one:
- In ChatGPT, open Settings > Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone.
- In OpenAI's Privacy Portal, select Do not train on my content.
The switch looks forward. After you opt out, OpenAI says it won't use your new conversations. Its help pages don't say that photos from earlier conversations are pulled back out of training data. OpenAI does say it takes steps to reduce personal information in training datasets before it uses user content.
The thumbs up and thumbs down buttons are a separate path. If you rate a response, the entire conversation tied to that feedback may be used for training even after you have opted out. If the chat contains a photo you don't want in a training set, skip the rating.
Accounts in a managed workspace follow different defaults. OpenAI doesn't use inputs or outputs from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu, or from its API, to train models by default. For a linked teen account, a parent can manage the training setting through Parental controls.
What the 53-image incident means for you
On September 25, 2026, OpenAI posted on X that AI agents in its research environment "sent training and evaluation data to third-party services when they shouldn't have." It added that "most of that data did not come from users," but that it had found "53 cases where images that people had uploaded were posted to image-hosting sites as links that weren't publicly listed."
According to the same post, those images came from accounts that allowed their data to be used to improve OpenAI's models. They had already been disassociated from the accounts and run through a privacy filter. The cases happened before the mitigations OpenAI later put in place, and OpenAI says it has worked with the hosting providers to remove most of the content and is removing the rest.
Kept in proportion, the lesson is narrow and practical. The photos involved were ones already flowing into model-improvement data. Photos from accounts with the training setting off were not part of the group OpenAI described. So if you would rather your photos never enter that pipeline, the training switch is the control that matters, and it is worth checking now instead of assuming.
What deleting a chat does and doesn't remove
When you delete a chat, it disappears from your account right away, and OpenAI schedules it for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days. You can't restore it afterward, either in ChatGPT or through OpenAI Support.
Three things can outlive that deletion:
- The Library copy. OpenAI's retention page says it plainly: "Deleting a chat does not delete a file that remains saved in Library." You have to delete the photo there as well.
- Content already used for training. The 30-day rule has exceptions. It doesn't apply if the chat was already de-identified and disassociated from your account, or if OpenAI has to keep it longer for security or legal reasons.
- Copies other people saved from a shared link. Deleting the conversation removes its link, but it can't reach a copy someone already saved.
Archiving isn't a softer form of deletion. An archived chat stays saved exactly as long as a regular one.
Checklist: remove every copy of a photo you regret uploading
Work through these in order. The first steps stop the photo from spreading further, and the later ones clean up what's already stored.
- Check your shared links. Go to Settings > Data controls > Shared links > Manage. Delete any link to the chat that contains the photo. If you already sent the link to someone, ask them to delete anything they saved.
- Delete the chat. Use delete, not archive. Deletion is scheduled within 30 days.
- Delete the photo from Library. Find it in Library and delete it. Items in Recently deleted may still be restorable until they're permanently deleted, which OpenAI schedules within 30 days.
- Check Projects and custom GPTs. If you added the photo to a project or to a GPT's knowledge, remove the file or delete the project or GPT.
- Turn off training for the future. Switch off Improve the model for everyone. This covers new conversations only.
- Leave the thumbs alone. Don't rate responses in chats that contain photos you want kept out of training.
Once all six are done, the only copies left are ones OpenAI keeps for the stated security or legal reasons, anything already de-identified for training, and copies other people saved themselves.
Should you upload this photo?
ChatGPT's model doesn't read the original file name or metadata of an image, and it resizes images before analyzing them. That covers what the model looks at. OpenAI doesn't say whether the stored file keeps its EXIF data, such as GPS location. If the location a photo was taken matters to you, remove it before uploading, or crop or screenshot the photo so you upload a fresh file without the original's tags. Treat that as your own precaution, not something OpenAI does for you.
The type of photo matters more than any single setting:
- A selfie or portrait you want edited. This is a normal use. Turn off training first if you don't want your face in model-improvement data, and delete the chat and Library copy afterward if you don't need them. - Photos of your children. Your child can't weigh this choice, so the bar should be higher. Crop them out if the task doesn't need them, and use a temporary chat when it does.
- Other people in the picture. They didn't agree to the upload. Crop or blur them, especially other people's kids.
- IDs, passports, bank cards and account screenshots. Avoid uploading these to a regular chat at all. If you must, use a temporary chat, cover the numbers you don't need, and never put them in a shared link. OpenAI's sharing guidance also warns against including health or financial details and account numbers in shared content.
- Screenshots with other people's messages or data. Crop to the part you need before uploading.
For a one-off sensitive photo, a temporary chat is the simplest option. Open a new chat, select Temporary, and pick Personalized or Unpersonalized before you send the first message. The chat stays out of your history, isn't used for training, doesn't create memories, and doesn't save the upload to Library. Keep one limitation in mind: if you later save the chat, it becomes a regular chat, the photo can land in Library, and your training setting applies again.
Does ChatGPT share your photos?
The sharing OpenAI documents is the shared link you create yourself. On a personal account, anyone who has that link can see the conversation, including supported images and uploaded files. Links are anonymous by default, although some older sharing experiences can show the creator's name, so check the preview before sending.
Shared-link pages aren't meant to be indexed by search engines, but OpenAI is explicit that this "does not make a link private." There are no per-recipient permissions and no expiration date, and anyone who can open a link can forward it. Turning off the training setting doesn't delete existing links or change who can open them. In a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace, links open only for eligible members of the same workspace.
