# Google AI Plus vs Pro: Pro Gets Argon, Plus Loses Pro Models

> US prices, October 2026: Pro is $19.99 a month with Gemini 4 Argon, 3.1 Pro and 5 TB. Plus is $4.99 or $9.99 and loses Pro models on a date Google emails you.

---
Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month in the US. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 with 400 GB of storage or $9.99 with 2 TB, so moving up to Pro costs $15 or $10 a month, depending on which Plus you would otherwise buy. These are US list prices for personal accounts before tax: $4.99 and $19.99 as of October 15, 2026, and the 2 TB Plus price as listed on October 12, 2026.

The models are now the biggest difference. Pro includes Gemini 4 Argon, which reached Pro and Ultra on October 13, 2026, and keeps Gemini 3.1 Pro. Plus is being cut back to Flash-Lite and Flash. Google's plan pages already list Plus with the Flash model only, and Google is emailing each Plus subscriber the date they lose the ability to select Pro models. The email quoted in the press gives November 13, 2026.

The extra money also buys twice the Gemini usage (4x the free limit instead of 2x), 3.8 Flash instead of 3.6 Flash, a 1 million-token context window instead of 128k, the option to buy AI credits, expanded limits in Antigravity, Jules and AI Studio, Gemini in Docs and Sheets, and 5 TB of storage with YouTube Premium Lite.

The short rule: Plus is enough if Flash handles your everyday chat, writing and research, you rarely hit limits, and your files fit in 400 GB or 2 TB. Pro pays off if you want Argon or 3.1 Pro, hit Plus limits most weeks, feed Gemini documents or codebases longer than roughly 190 pages, code with Antigravity or Jules most days, or need more than 2 TB of storage anyway. Eligible US college students, people who need Deep Think and developers who need API volume have better options than either plan.

## Google AI Plus vs Pro prices in the US: $4.99, $9.99 or $19.99

Google AI Plus is one plan sold in two storage sizes. Google's [Google AI Plus help page](https://support.google.com/googleone/answer/16548195?hl=en) says "Choose from 400 GB or 2 TB of storage", and the [Google One AI plans comparison page](https://one.google.com/about/google-ai-plans/?hl=en) lists Plus storage as "400 GB or 2 TB". Different Google pages show different sizes, which is why you see two prices quoted for the same plan.

| Plan (US, personal account) | Storage | Monthly | Annual | Where Google shows it |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Google AI Plus | 400 GB | $4.99 | Not listed | [Gemini subscriptions page (US)](https://gemini.google/us/subscriptions/?hl=en), Google One AI plans page |
| Google AI Plus | 2 TB | $9.99 | $99.99 | [Google One plans and pricing page](https://one.google.com/about/plans?hl=en) |
| Google AI Pro | 5 TB | $19.99 | $199.99 | All three pages |

*US list prices: the $4.99 and $19.99 monthly prices as of October 15, 2026; the 2 TB Plus prices and the Pro annual price as listed on October 12, 2026. Tax, region and promotions change the amount you see at checkout, and checkout is the final word.*

Two details matter when you compare. First, the 2 TB option on the US Google One plans page is now Google AI Plus (2 TB). That page lists no standalone 2 TB storage plan, so "get a 2 TB Google One plan instead of Pro" now means buying Plus. Second, a $7.99 Plus price is out of date. [PCMag reported in June 2026](https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/should-you-pay-for-google-gemini-pro-or-plus-5-features-make-it-worth-it) that Plus had dropped to $4.99.

Annual billing saves money on the plans where Google lists it: Pro at $199.99 a year instead of $239.88 (12 × $19.99), a $39.89 saving, and Plus 2 TB at $99.99 instead of $119.88 (12 × $9.99), a $19.89 saving. Google One shows both savings figures on its plans page.

## Does Google AI Plus get the Pro model? Not after its switch date

Only until Google switches your account over. As of October 15, 2026, the US Gemini subscriptions page lists Plus with "Access to our Flash model" and nothing more, and the Google One comparison table marks "Access to our Pro models" as unavailable on Plus. Google's [Gemini Apps Help page on changes to Gemini model access and limits](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/17004136?hl=en) shows what Plus keeps after the change: Flash-Lite and Flash, with no Pro model.

Google hasn't published one date for everyone. The help page says Plus subscribers "should receive an email that explains when these changes will take effect for you." The email [quoted by 9to5Google on October 14, 2026](https://9to5google.com/2026/10/14/gemini-ai-plus-loses-pro-november/) reads: "Starting on 13 November 2026, the ability to select Pro models in both the Gemini app and AI Mode in Google Search will only be available to Google AI Pro subscribers and above." The Japanese site HelenTech reported that the date may fall on November 14 in Japan. Your own email is the date that applies to you.

What that means in practice:

- **Before your date**, the email's wording implies Plus subscribers can still select Pro models such as 3.1 Pro.
- **After your date**, Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash in the Gemini app and AI Mode. The email says chats you started with a Pro model "can be continued with a different model."
- **To keep choosing Pro models**, you need Google AI Pro or Ultra. Pro also keeps 3.1 Pro and adds Argon.

Part of the confusion is the name. "Gemini Pro" can mean the 3.1 Pro model or the Google AI Pro plan. Until their switch date, Plus subscribers can use the Pro model without having the Pro plan. After it, the Pro model comes only with the Pro plan or Ultra.

### Gemini 4 Argon is on Pro and Ultra, not Plus

[Google's Gemini release notes](https://gemini.google/us/release-notes/?hl=en) say Gemini 4 Argon began "rolling out globally for Google AI Pro & Ultra subscribers in the Gemini app" on October 13, 2026. The Google One Pro card adds access in AI Mode in Search, and the comparison table marks Argon unavailable on Plus. Inside Antigravity and AI Studio, the plan quota for Argon belongs to Ultra only, so Pro gets Argon in the Gemini app and Search but not in those two developer tools.

Google publishes no prompt counts for Argon on any plan. The [Gemini 4 Argon usage limits guide for Pro and Ultra](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/gemini-4-argon-usage-limits) covers how Argon draws on your allowance and what Ultra adds.

### 3.6 Flash on Plus, 3.8 Flash on Pro

You may have heard that the two plans use the same models and only the limits differ. That stopped being true on September 2, 2026, with 3.8 Flash, and the gap is wider now that Argon is Pro-only and the Pro models are leaving Plus. The Google One Plus card lists "Access to Gemini 3.6 Flash", and [Google's Gemini 3.8 Flash launch post](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/models-and-research/gemini-models/3-8-flash-and-3-8-flash-cyber/) says 3.8 Flash "is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers across the Gemini app". It does not mention Plus. The US subscriptions page no longer prints version numbers and just says "our Flash model" on both cards.

How much better 3.8 Flash is than 3.6 Flash isn't published. Google compares 3.8 Flash only with 3.7 Flash, citing gains in software engineering and agentic tasks. Once Plus loses the Pro models, Flash is the strongest model a Plus subscriber can pick, so this row matters more than it used to. For the same model through the API, see [Gemini 3.8 Flash pricing and model ID](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/gemini-3-comparison).

## Gemini Plus vs Pro limits: 2x vs 4x free, refreshed every 5 hours

Pro gives you twice the Gemini app usage of Plus. Google sets the limits relative to the free tier: Plus is "2x higher than standard limits" and Pro is "4x higher". The limits are compute-based. They factor in how complex your prompt is, which models and features you use, and how long the chat is. Your allowance refreshes every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit.

Google publishes no message counts for any plan, so you cannot translate 2x or 4x into prompts per day. What you can predict is what burns through the allowance faster. Google's help page on model access says you can set each model's effort level to low, medium or high, and that higher effort uses more of your limit. A chat on a Pro model at high effort runs out sooner than one on Flash at low effort.

What happens when you hit the limit differs by plan:

- **On both plans**, you can keep the conversation going on Flash-Lite, or wait for the 5-hour refresh.
- **On Plus**, you cannot buy more. The [Google One Help page on buying AI credits](https://support.google.com/googleone/answer/17103110?hl=en) says "AI credits are not available for purchase for Google AI Plus plans."
- **On Pro**, the plan manager can buy AI credits for extra usage beyond the plan limit. That help page names Google Flow and Google Antigravity as the products. AI credits can't be bought in Japan.

To see how close you are, open Settings > Usage Limits at gemini.google.com. If the 5-hour limit stops you a few times a month, Plus is fine. If the weekly limit stops you, Pro's doubled allowance is the direct fix.

## Context window: 128k tokens on Plus, 1 million on Pro

This is the most concrete capability gap between the two plans after the models. The [Gemini Apps Help page on limits and upgrades](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/16275805?hl=en) lists a 32k-token context window without a plan, 128k on Plus, and 1 million on Pro and Ultra. Google says 1 million tokens covers "up to 1,500 pages of text or 30,000 lines of code".

Scaling Google's own figures down gives a rough sense of the Plus ceiling: 128k is 12.8% of 1 million, so about 192 pages (1,500 × 0.128) or about 3,840 lines of code (30,000 × 0.128). Real documents vary, so treat this as an estimate.

![Google AI Plus vs Pro limits: 2x vs 4x the free usage, a 5-hour refresh up to a weekly limit, Flash-Lite at the limit, AI credits only on Pro, and a 128k vs 1 million-token context window](https://blog.laozhang.ai/posts/en/google-ai-plus-vs-pro/img/limits-and-context-window.webp)

If you go past the window, Google warns that answers may not account for all the content or may "miss connections or details throughout the content". So if you regularly upload long contracts, full books, research packs or a whole repository and ask questions that span all of it, Pro is the plan that can see the whole thing. For a 20-page report or a single source file, Plus has room to spare.

## Every feature that differs between Google AI Plus and Pro

Most headline features sit on both plans, so only the rows that differ appear here. Where Google's pages describe the same thing differently, the note says so.

*Source: Google One AI plans comparison page, Gemini subscriptions page (US) and Gemini Apps Help. The Argon, Pro model, Flash, usage, context window and Tasks rows are as of October 15, 2026; the other rows as listed on October 12, 2026. "More", "Expanded" and "Limited" are Google's own labels; Google doesn't publish the numbers behind them.*

The same on both plans: family sharing with up to five others, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, the daily briefing in the Gemini app (US), scheduled actions, Nano Banana 2 images and redo with Nano Banana Pro, video generation with Gemini Omni Flash, music generation, Gmail proofreading and the Gmail AI Overview (US), custom Flow tools, and priority access to some new Gemini features. Gems no longer appear in Google's feature table. Skills, which Google announced as their replacement on September 30, 2026, are listed on every tier, including free.

Neither plan includes Deep Think, 4K image or video upscaling, or Project Genie. Those are Google AI Ultra features.

## Is Google AI Pro worth the upgrade? Price the gap by storage size

The real price of Pro depends on how much storage you need, because Plus and Pro bundle different amounts. Work out which row you are in before you compare features.

| Storage you need | Plus you would buy | Google AI Pro | Extra for Pro |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Up to 400 GB | $4.99/mo (400 GB) | $19.99/mo | $15.00/mo, or $180.00 over 12 months |
| 400 GB to 2 TB | $9.99/mo or $99.99/yr (2 TB) | $19.99/mo or $199.99/yr | $10.00/mo, or $100.00/yr on annual billing |
| More than 2 TB | No Plus size fits | $19.99/mo (5 TB) | Nothing: Pro is the cheapest US plan listed above 2 TB |

*US list prices: $4.99 and $19.99 a month as of October 15, 2026; the 2 TB Plus prices and the Pro annual price as listed on October 12, 2026. The 400 GB Plus has no annual price on Google's public pages, so its row uses monthly billing.*

The last row changes the question. If your Google storage is already over 2 TB, the US Google One plans page offers nothing between Plus 2 TB and Pro 5 TB. You would pay $19.99 for storage alone, and every AI difference in the table above comes with it, including Argon and the Pro models.

![Extra cost of Google AI Pro by storage need as of October 12, 2026 in the US: $15 a month more up to 400 GB, $10 a month more from 400 GB to 2 TB, and nothing extra above 2 TB](https://blog.laozhang.ai/posts/en/google-ai-plus-vs-pro/img/price-gap-by-storage.webp)

The bundled extras lower the real gap only if you would otherwise pay for them or actually use them:

- **YouTube Premium Lite.** PCMag puts its normal price at $8.99 a month. If you would buy it anyway, the 2 TB gap falls to $1.01 a month ($10.00 − $8.99) and the 400 GB gap to $6.01 ($15.00 − $8.99). It doesn't activate if you already have YouTube Premium. It belongs to the plan manager only and isn't included on Google One trial memberships.
- **$10 a month in Google Cloud credits.** These are worth face value only if you already spend money on Google Cloud or the paid Gemini API. They go to the plan manager and can't be shared.
- **Google Home Premium Standard and Google Health Premium.** Google describes these as $10 and $9.99 a month in value. They count only if you have the hardware (Google Home devices, a Pixel Watch or Fitbit) and would subscribe otherwise. Family members don't get Home Premium.

Google's value figures are list prices for the add-ons, not savings. A household that never opens YouTube and doesn't use Google Cloud should compare the bare gap: $10 or $15 a month for the AI differences alone, which now include Argon and keeping the Pro models.

## Plus or Pro: which plan fits how you use Gemini

Start from what you do in Gemini each week, not from the feature count.

### Google AI Plus is enough when

- Flash answers your everyday chat, writing and summaries well, and you can do without Pro models once your switch date passes.
- You run the occasional Deep Research report, and the weekly limit rarely stops you.
- Your files and conversations fit well under about 190 pages of text at a time.
- You make images and short videos now and then; Plus has Nano Banana Pro redo, video generation and 200 Flow credits a month.
- Your storage need is 2 TB or less, and you don't care about YouTube Premium Lite.

### Google AI Pro earns the extra money when

- You want Gemini 4 Argon, or you rely on 3.1 Pro for harder reasoning and don't want to lose it when Plus switches over.
- The weekly limit on Plus stops you more than once or twice a month, or you want to keep working past the limit with AI credits.
- You work with long documents, transcripts or codebases and need answers that take the whole thing into account (1 million tokens instead of 128k).
- You want Gemini inside Docs and Sheets, Meet note-taking, Vids video generation, Chrome auto browse or Gemini Spark.
- You produce video in Flow regularly: 1,000 credits a month instead of 200.
- You need more than 2 TB of storage, or you would pay for YouTube Premium Lite anyway.

### Plus or Pro for coding and Antigravity

For daily coding, choose Pro. Plus has "Limited" access in Antigravity, Jules, AI Studio and Android Studio, and after its switch date it can't select Pro models in the Gemini app. Pro has "Expanded" access, the 1 million-token context for larger codebases, AI credits to keep Antigravity running after the plan limit, and $10 a month in Google Cloud credits. Even Pro is the entry level for Antigravity: Google's subscriptions page calls it "entry rate limits", reserves higher limits for Ultra, and only Ultra's plan quota includes Argon in Antigravity and AI Studio. Plus suits trying these tools or using them a few times a week.

### When neither Plus nor Pro is the right purchase

- **You're an eligible US college student.** Google offers a year of Google AI Pro at no cost, so claim that before paying for either plan. It renews at the paid price afterward. See [Google AI Pro free for eligible US college students for 12 months](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/gemini-3-1-pro-free-for-students) for eligibility, and the [Gemini discount guide with the free student year by country](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/gemini-discount-guide-2026) if you're outside the US.
- **You need Deep Think, 4K upscaling, Project Genie, or Argon inside Antigravity and AI Studio.** Only Google AI Ultra has them, from $99.99 a month for 5x Pro's usage or $199.99 for 20x.
- **You want to call Gemini from your own code at volume.** Plus and Pro raise limits inside Google's apps. Programmatic use goes through the Gemini API with its own key and billing; see [Google AI Studio API key: is it free?](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/google-ai-studio-api-key).
- **You use a Workspace account.** Only personal Google Accounts can buy Google AI plans. Workspace customers get Gemini through a separate add-on.

## Sharing Google AI Plus or Pro with family: what's shared and what isn't

Both plans can be shared with up to five other people in the same country, and the plan manager must be 18 or older. According to the [Google One Help page on family sharing](https://support.google.com/googleone/answer/9004015?hl=en), family members share:

- The storage quota. Members don't get their own space; everyone draws from the same 400 GB, 2 TB or 5 TB.
- AI benefits such as the Gemini app, Google Antigravity and Gemini Notebook.
- AI credits, which only the plan manager can buy.

Two limits are pooled. Google says that "for some products like Google Flow and Google Antigravity, usage limits are shared by the entire family group rather than each member having their own separate limit." Three heavy Flow users on Plus would share 200 credits a month between them; on Pro they would share 1,000. Google doesn't say whether Gemini app limits are pooled the same way.

These Pro extras stay with the plan manager: YouTube Premium Lite (an individual plan), the Google Developer Program Cloud credits and Google Home Premium.

One wording conflict is worth knowing. The Google One AI plans FAQ says "Family plan members on a Google AI Pro plan can enjoy AI benefits", while the family-sharing help page doesn't restrict AI sharing to Pro, and both plan cards list family sharing. If sharing AI with family is the main reason you're choosing Plus, check what your family members see after you add them.

## Switching from Plus to Pro or back without losing paid time

You change plans in Google One under Manage membership, then Change membership plan. The [Google One Help page on changing your plan](https://support.google.com/googleone/answer/9003633?hl=en) sets out how the billing works:

- **Plus to Pro, billed through Google One.** Google doesn't describe this exact switch. The closest documented rule covers staying on an AI plan while increasing storage: "the remaining value of your original plan becomes one-time extra days of service on your new plan." Expect unused Plus time to become extra Pro days, not a refund.
- **Upgrades bought through Google Play.** You pay the full price of the new plan and the change takes effect immediately.
- **Pro to Plus.** A downgrade keeps Pro active until the end of your billing cycle, then Plus starts. You can schedule it any time without losing paid Pro days.
- **Monthly to annual.** The switch is immediate, and your remaining monthly time counts toward the annual price. Annual to monthly waits until the annual term ends.

Google's subscription terms say there are "no refunds for partial billing periods, except as required by applicable law." If you subscribed through a third-party partner or Pixel Pass, Google's Plus help page says you can't switch to Plus.

If you're on Plus now and rely on 3.1 Pro, find the switch date in your email from Google and decide before it arrives. Billed through Google One, the rule above turns your unused Plus time into extra Pro days, so upgrading early costs little. Billed through Google Play, you pay the full Pro price at once, so upgrading close to your Plus renewal wastes less. If Flash is enough for you, staying on Plus needs no action.

If you're new to both plans, a low-risk order is to start on Plus monthly only if Flash covers your work, watch Settings > Usage Limits for a couple of weeks, and upgrade if the weekly limit or the 128k context keeps getting in the way. If you already know you want Argon or 3.1 Pro, start on Pro. Move to annual billing once you know which plan you'll keep.

## FAQ

### Is Google AI Plus worth paying for over free Gemini?

It is if the free tier's limits or 32k-token context get in your way and Flash is good enough for you. Since October 9, 2026, free Gemini runs on Auto: most prompts go to Flash-Lite, and prompts that need deeper reasoning may go to Flash or Pro. With smart model selection turned off, free chats use Flash-Lite only. For $4.99 a month in the US, Plus lets you pick Flash-Lite or Flash yourself, doubles the free usage, raises the context window to 128k tokens, and adds video generation, the daily briefing, scheduled actions, Nano Banana Pro redo, 200 Flow credits and 400 GB of storage. If you mainly want Pro-model answers, Plus stops offering them on its switch date, free Auto sends only some harder prompts to Pro, and Google AI Pro is the plan that lets you choose Pro yourself.

### Is Google AI Plus or Pro better for image generation?

Both plans make the same images: Nano Banana 2 plus redo with Nano Banana Pro. Pro gives a larger allowance in the Gemini app, in Search and in Flow, where you get 1,000 credits a month instead of 200. For plan-by-plan image costs and when pay-per-image beats a plan, see [Nano Banana 2 subscription price and what Google AI plans change](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/nano-banana-2-subscription-price). For Pro-model images specifically, see [Is Nano Banana Pro free? Gemini plans, Flow limits and the API](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/gemini-nano-banana-pro-free-vs-pro-limits).

### Google AI Plus vs Pro for students: which one is free?

It depends on the country. Eligible US college students get Google AI Pro free for a year. In 140+ countries elsewhere, the free student plan is Google AI Plus. Google's model change applies to AI Plus subscriptions, and its help page doesn't carve out the student plan. The [Gemini discount guide](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/gemini-discount-guide-2026) lists what each country gets and the redemption deadline.

### Does Google AI Plus include YouTube Premium?

No. Google AI Pro includes YouTube Premium Lite for the plan manager, and Google AI Ultra includes YouTube Premium individual. Plus has no YouTube benefit.

### Is Google AI Pro better than ChatGPT Plus?

That's a different comparison, between two vendors at about $20 a month. For OpenAI's plan lineup, see [ChatGPT Go vs Plus vs Pro: which plan is worth it?](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/chatgpt-plus-worth-it-plans-comparison).
