If you were charged for ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT still shows the Free plan, do not subscribe again. The causes OpenAI, Apple and Google document are a subscription attached to a different ChatGPT account, an App Store or Google Play purchase that has not synced, and a payment that has not actually completed. OpenAI's own [troubleshooting steps for "charged but still on Free plan"](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6950777-what-is-chatgpt-plus) start with the account, not with the payment.

Five things you can observe decide which case is yours: which ChatGPT account is signed in, where the purchase was made, whether the charge completed, what the receipt says you bought, and who took the payment. Work through them in that order. If all five check out and the plan is still Free, the remaining route is OpenAI support, and the last two sections cover what to send and how long the refund windows stay open.

## Why you should not buy Plus again while the account shows Free

A second purchase creates a second subscription. It does not repair the first one. OpenAI's article on [avoiding duplicate charges](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001043-how-do-i-avoid-being-charged-twice-if-i-subscribe-to-chatgpt-on-ios-android-and-the-web) says so directly: "Having two separately purchased subscriptions does not automatically qualify you for a refund."

The reason is that subscriptions are managed where they were bought. A plan started on chatgpt.com, one started through Apple, and one started through Google Play are three separate billing records. If the first payment later turns out to be valid, you are paying twice and have to cancel one of them yourself on the platform that bills it. Paying again also does not reliably unlock anything: one user in a long-running [OpenAI community thread](https://community.openai.com/t/paid-for-chatgpt-plus-but-still-getting-free-version/129073) describes paying a second time, seeing two successful payments in the invoice history, and still being on Free.

The same article describes a delayed version of this problem. If an Apple renewal fails and you subscribe somewhere else, then later fix the Apple payment method, Apple can collect the outstanding payment and you end up with two active subscriptions.

## The five checks, and what each result means

| What you observe | What it means | Action |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Settings > Account shows an email you did not expect, or an `@privaterelay.appleid.com` address | You are in a different ChatGPT account than the one that bought Plus | Sign out, then sign back in with the method used at purchase |
| The receipt came from Apple or Google, not from OpenAI | The purchase is tied to a store account and one ChatGPT account | Sign in to that ChatGPT account in the app and use Restore purchases |
| Your bank shows a pending line, or the first attempt failed | Money may not have moved yet | Wait for the charge to post or fail before doing anything else |
| The receipt names Go, a gift card or a wallet top-up | You did not buy Plus | Start the Plus plan on the correct account, or keep the plan you bought |
| Someone else's card or a third-party service paid | The receipt belongs to the payer, not to you | Go back to whoever paid and get the receipt and account details |
| Correct account, completed charge, receipt says Plus, plan still Free | A paid subscription that did not apply | Contact OpenAI with the receipt or the last four card digits |

## Check 1: which ChatGPT account is signed in right now

This is the first step in OpenAI's list, and it comes before signing out. On the web, open Settings > Account and read the email shown there. That email identifies the ChatGPT account on this device. It is not necessarily the email your receipt went to. OpenAI states that "the email where you receive invoices or receipts may be different from your ChatGPT account email."

Two accounts are easier to create than most people expect. According to OpenAI's [sign-in troubleshooting article](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/7426629-why-cant-i-log-in-to-chatgpt), "different sign-in methods (email/password vs Continue with Google/Microsoft/Apple) can create separate accounts and subscriptions," and OpenAI does not merge accounts automatically. If you paid while signed in with Continue with Google and later typed your email and a password, you may be looking at a second account that has always been on Free.

If you are not sure which method you used at purchase, try each one in an incognito window: email and password, Google, Microsoft, Apple. Check Settings > Account after each sign-in. Stop when the plan reads Plus.

### Hide My Email accounts use a private relay address

If you created the account with Sign in with Apple and chose Hide My Email, the ChatGPT account is tied to an address ending in `@privaterelay.appleid.com`. Signing in with your personal email opens a different account, or produces a "Wrong authentication method" error. OpenAI's instruction for this case is to select Continue with Apple and use the same Apple account.

### A Business workspace hides a personal Plus plan

If you also belong to a ChatGPT Business or Enterprise workspace, check which workspace is active. OpenAI's [Business FAQ](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8542115) says a personal subscription continues separately when the personal and Business workspaces are kept apart, and content is not shared between them. Switch workspaces from the profile menu on the web or from the sidebar on mobile, then look at the plan again.

### After you find the right account

Sign out on the device that shows Free, then sign back in to the account that holds the subscription. This is step four in OpenAI's list, and it only helps once you know the account email and sign-in method. Signing out first can leave you guessing which account you were in.

The web account switcher holds up to two accounts, but switching does not merge billing. A subscription also cannot be moved between accounts. OpenAI's [transfer article](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9135236) gives one route: cancel on the original account and buy again on the new one.

## Check 2: where you bought it — web, App Store or Google Play

The purchase channel decides where the subscription is visible, how it syncs, and who can refund it. The receipt tells you the channel. An Apple receipt or a Google Play order email means a store purchase. An invoice from OpenAI means a web purchase.

| Channel | Where the subscription appears | How to sync it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| chatgpt.com | ChatGPT Settings, under Account or Billing | Sign in to the purchasing ChatGPT account |
| App Store | iPhone Settings > your name > Subscriptions | Settings > Account > Restore purchases in the ChatGPT app |
| Google Play | Google Play Store > menu > Subscriptions | Settings > Restore purchases in the ChatGPT app |

A web subscription never shows up in the Apple or Google subscription lists, so an empty list there proves nothing about a web purchase.

![Comparison of chatgpt.com, App Store and Google Play purchases: who sends the receipt, where the subscription appears, how to sync it and where a refund request goes](https://blog.laozhang.ai/posts/en/chatgpt-plus-paid-but-still-free/img/purchase-channel-comparison.webp)

### iPhone: restore the purchase on the account that bought it

An App Store purchase is linked to two things at once. OpenAI's [restore purchases article](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8346573) puts it this way: "The purchase is linked to both that account and your Apple ID." Sign in to the ChatGPT account you were using when you subscribed, then open Settings > Account > Restore purchases in the app.

If you restore while signed in to a different ChatGPT account, the app can show "This subscription is associated with another OpenAI account." OpenAI's [article on that message](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001056) explains the limits. The subscription cannot be transferred or shared, the same Apple ID cannot buy a second subscription for another ChatGPT account, and reinstalling the app does not help. The fix is to sign in to the original ChatGPT account.

### Android: confirm the Google Play order first

Google's [general guidance for in-app purchases that did not arrive](https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/1050566?hl=en) is to confirm the payment completed in your Google Play order history, force-stop and reopen the app, and update the Play Store. OpenAI's Plus article then gives one line for both mobile platforms: on the iOS or Android app, go to Settings > Restore purchases. OpenAI has no separate Android article, so the exact menu position in the Android app may differ from the iPhone path.

Make sure the Play Store is signed in to the Google account that made the purchase. Your Google account email and your ChatGPT account email can be different addresses.

## Check 3: whether the charge completed or is only pending

A pending line in a banking app is not the same as a completed purchase. Google says of pending card entries that "these are authorization requests, and not charges," and that they can stay on a statement for [1–14 business days](https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/6224192?hl=en) depending on the bank. Apple describes small temporary authorization holds in the same way and adds that a pending charge [cannot be refunded yet](https://support.apple.com/en-us/118223). These are general store rules, not ChatGPT-specific statements, but they explain how a card can appear charged while no subscription exists.

For web purchases, the invoice is the better record. Look in ChatGPT Settings under Account or Billing for the payment management link, which opens a billing portal with [Invoice History](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12356340). If Invoice History is missing or empty, OpenAI's advice is to check that you are signed in to the correct account or workspace. That sends you back to check 1. Apple and Google receipts never appear in this portal.

Failed first attempts complicate things. OpenAI says its billing system "may retry the payment later" and that "a failed charge can sometimes succeed on a later retry." The community thread mentioned above opens with exactly that sequence: a failed renewal, a successful retry visible in the invoice history, and an account still on Free. Reports like this show that the case exists and that it ends at a support ticket. They do not show how often it happens.

If your bank asked for verification during checkout, OpenAI's guidance is not to close or refresh the checkout page while verification is in progress. If the payment was rejected outright, the cause is on the card side, and [ChatGPT Payment Declined? Check These 5 Things Before Retrying](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/chatgpt-payment-declined-guide) covers that case.

## Check 4: what the receipt says you actually bought

Read the product name and amount on the receipt. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month in US dollars, billed monthly, with no annual option.

Three purchases look like Plus and are not:

- **ChatGPT Go.** Individual plans are Free, Go, Plus and Pro. Go is a separate, cheaper paid plan, and the upgrade menu lists it next to Plus. An account on Go is paid, but it lacks some Plus features.
- **An OpenAI gift card.** Gift cards are US-only and are redeemed into a wallet balance. OpenAI's [gift card article](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001491) answers the question directly: "Does redeeming a gift card start a paid subscription? No." You still have to start the plan on the web, on the same account. Wallet balance cannot pay for an Apple or Google subscription and cannot move to another account.
- **A partner or promo code.** These work through the partner's dedicated link. OpenAI's [promotions article](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/10492689) says not to pay if the checkout price looks wrong, and that OpenAI does not reissue partner codes. The partner does.

## Check 5: who took the payment

If a friend, an employer or a service that subscribes on your behalf made the payment, the receipt and the charged card are theirs. OpenAI locates a subscription from the receipt or the last four digits of the charged card, so you cannot open a useful support request without the payer.

Ask the payer two questions: which ChatGPT account email was signed in at checkout, and whether the charge completed. If the plan was bought on an account that is not yours, it cannot be transferred to you. OpenAI's terms of use also prohibit sharing account credentials, so if a seller set up the plan on an account it controls, the dispute is with the seller.

## How long ChatGPT Plus takes to appear after payment

OpenAI publishes no activation time for Plus. The only timed statement in its help center is in the [ChatGPT Go article](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11989085), and it covers store purchases: "it may take a few minutes for the upgrade to appear in the ChatGPT app. If your subscription isn't showing, wait a few minutes and restart the app."

That is a reasonable first step for an App Store or Google Play purchase. It is not a guarantee for Plus, and no official document supports waiting a day or longer. If the charge is completed and the five checks are done, contact support.

An outage is an unlikely explanation as of October 2, 2026. [OpenAI's status history](https://status.openai.com/history) from August through early October lists no incident about subscriptions or upgrades failing to apply. It does list login incidents, the latest resolved by October 1, and periods of delayed support replies in September. A missing status entry does not rule out an individual sync failure.

## What to send OpenAI support when the invoice is paid

Open the chat bubble at the bottom right of help.openai.com. A virtual assistant answers first. Be signed in to the account that was charged. If the widget shows `requires_login`, "login required," or cannot find a subscription, choose Log in, sign in to the correct account and reopen the chat.

OpenAI's [contact article](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6614161) and its troubleshooting steps together ask for the following:

- The receipt, or the last four digits of the charged card.
- The ChatGPT account email. If you are unsure, list every candidate email and sign-in method you tried.
- The charge date, time and time zone, and the plan you bought.
- Screenshots of the plan shown in Settings and of the invoice or store receipt.
- The steps already taken: accounts tried, Restore purchases, sign-out and sign-in.
- Browser name and version, operating system and device type.

Never send a password or a verification code. If you cannot sign in to the charged account at all, include the billing information and the emails and methods you tried. For a fuller checklist, see [ChatGPT Subscription Refund Evidence: What to Collect After a Trial or Wrong Charge](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/chatgpt-subscription-refund-evidence).

For App Store purchases that still show Free after restoring, OpenAI asks for the same details: the emails and sign-in methods tried, the error shown, and the steps taken.

## Refund windows: seven days in the US, 14 days in the UK and EU

Refunds are possible, but the clock starts at the charge. OpenAI's [refund article](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/7232895-how-do-i-request-a-refund-for-my-chatgpt-subscription) says payments are generally non-refundable, with exceptions for a verified OpenAI billing error, validated unauthorized charges, or "a documented OpenAI service or access failure." A paid plan that never applied is the kind of case the last exception describes, which is why the screenshots and steps listed above matter.

| Situation | Window or rule | Who to ask |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Unused individual subscription, US and most regions | Discretionary refund if you contact OpenAI within seven days of the charge | OpenAI Help Center chat |
| Resident of the EU, UK or Turkey | Prorated refund if you cancel within 14 days of purchase | OpenAI Help Center chat |
| Bought through the App Store | Refunds must be requested from Apple | Apple |
| Bought through Google Play | Help Center chat, signed in to the charged account | OpenAI |

Approved refunds are processed within 5–7 business days for web purchases and within 10 business days for Google Play purchases.

Two actions can close these routes. A bank dispute blocks an OpenAI refund while it is open: "We cannot issue a separate refund while a payment dispute is active." Keep the dispute as the last step, after support has answered. Canceling, on the other hand, only stops future renewals and does not establish refund eligibility. If you need to locate and cancel a duplicate, [Cancel Codex or ChatGPT Billing: Find the Charge First](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/cancel-chatgpt-subscription-2026) walks through each billing channel.

## Questions about a paid Plus plan that is not active

### Why isn't ChatGPT Plus working after I paid for it?

The first cause OpenAI's troubleshooting steps address is being signed in to a different ChatGPT account than the one that bought Plus. Sign-in methods can create separate accounts, and receipts can go to a different email than the account uses. Check Settings > Account, then the purchase channel, then whether the charge completed.

### I paid for ChatGPT Plus on iPhone and it still shows Free. What should I do?

Sign in to the ChatGPT account you used when you subscribed, then open Settings > Account > Restore purchases in the app. The purchase is linked to both that ChatGPT account and your Apple ID. If you used Hide My Email, sign in with Continue with Apple. Refunds for App Store purchases go through Apple.

### Can I move a ChatGPT Plus subscription to my other account?

No. OpenAI does not transfer subscriptions between accounts. You cancel on the account that holds the plan and subscribe again on the other one. [How to Pay for ChatGPT Plus: Check the Checkout Before You Subscribe](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/chatgpt-plus-recharge-guide-2026) shows what to confirm at checkout so the new plan lands on the intended account.

### Is a paid ChatGPT Plus invoice with no activation a known bug?

OpenAI has not confirmed one. Users on its community forum report the symptom, including [an invoice marked Paid on an account that stayed on Free for more than 12 hours](https://community.openai.com/t/chatgpt-plus-invoice-marked-paid-but-subscription-not-activated/1380460) after re-login and a second browser. No incident or fix for it has been published. Once the account, channel and charge are confirmed, the route is a support request with the receipt or the last four card digits.
