# ChatGPT Image Generation Not Working? Match the Error to the Fix

> Check Image Generation on status.openai.com, then read the message: limits and refusals won't clear with retries, and a failed image may already be saved.

When ChatGPT won't make your image, the words on the screen tell you which of three situations you are in. **Wait** if OpenAI's status page shows an incident on the ChatGPT "Image Generation" component. **Stop retrying** if you see a limit banner with a reset time, a "may violate our guardrails" refusal, or an account or country block. **Fix it on your side** if you see "Image generation failed. Try again.", a spinner that never finishes, or a text reply saying it couldn't make the image: check your Images library first, then try a private window, cleared cache and cookies, or another browser.

If none of that works after an outage has been marked resolved, OpenAI's own support staff treat it as a possible account-specific problem and ask you to email support@openai.com with screenshots. The rest of this page goes message by message, as of October 15, 2026.

## Find your ChatGPT image error: message, cause and next step

Read the message word for word before you do anything else. Logging out and clearing cache won't touch a plan limit or a policy refusal, so it pays to know which one you have.

| What you see | What it usually means | What to do | When to stop |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Status page shows a problem on "Image Generation" | OpenAI incident | Save your prompt and wait for the incident to resolve | Don't retry until it's resolved |
| "Image generation failed. Try again." or a long hang on "One last tweak" | The image step failed or stalled | Check Images in the sidebar first, then retry once in a new chat | Failing after the outage is over and after browser steps: email support |
| "I wasn't able to generate the image due to an error on my side" | No official explanation; most likely the image tool failed | Same as the row above | Same as the row above |
| "You've hit the plus plan limit for image generations requests…" | Your plan's image limit | Note the reset time; wait or change plan | Right away: retries don't shorten the wait |
| "We're so sorry, but the image we created may violate our guardrails…" | Post-generation policy check | Change the part of the request that matches the named category | After the edited request is refused again |
| A custom GPT answers only in text | Image Generation is off in that GPT | Ask the builder to enable it, or use regular ChatGPT | Nothing on your side will change it |
| Image option missing on a teen account | Parental control | Ask the parent or guardian who manages the account | Nothing on your side will change it |
| Account blocked or suspended | Account or country issue | Contact OpenAI support | Don't keep generating |

The sections below explain each row, with the source behind it.

## Is ChatGPT image generation down? Check the Image Generation component

Open the [OpenAI status page](https://status.openai.com/) and look for the ChatGPT component called "Image Generation", not just the overall ChatGPT line. The API has its own separate component called "Images". A problem on "Images" alone affects developers using the API, not necessarily the ChatGPT app.

Outages are not rare. Between July 21 and October 14, 2026, OpenAI's status history lists 12 image-related incidents. Nine of them named ChatGPT's Image Generation component, among them "Image generation unavailable in ChatGPT" in late July and "Elevated errors for image generation" on September 8. The other three hit only the API's Images component, including "Limited availability on gpt-image-2.5-flare and gpt-image-2.5-sunburst" on October 14. All 12 are marked resolved.

![OpenAI status page components for images: ChatGPT Image Generation named in 9 of 12 incidents, API Images alone in 3](https://blog.laozhang.ai/posts/en/chatgpt-image-generation-not-working/img/status-page-image-components.webp)

During an incident there is nothing to fix on your end. When image generation went down on July 21, OpenAI's forum support staff wrote that "a mitigation has been applied" and pointed people to the status page for updates, in the [OpenAI Community thread "ChatGPT Image Generator Down"](https://community.openai.com/t/chatgpt-image-generator-down/1387699). Keep your prompt somewhere safe and try again after the incident is marked resolved.

The status page doesn't catch everything. In the June 18–23 episode, people in the [OpenAI Community thread "Is ChatGPT Image Generation Down?"](https://community.openai.com/t/is-chatgpt-image-generation-down/1384177) said the status site showed no problem while images failed for Plus and Pro users on the web, the desktop app and phones in several countries. OpenAI support later confirmed "a fix was deployed". If the status page is green but your failure matches a wave of same-day reports, treat it as an incident anyway and wait a few hours before trying the account steps.

## "Image generation failed. Try again." or stuck on "One last tweak"

Before you retry, open **Images** in the sidebar. OpenAI says every image you create with ChatGPT is saved there automatically, according to [OpenAI's Images in ChatGPT help article](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11084440-images-in-chatgpt). On July 7, 2026, several users in the [OpenAI Community thread "Image not getting created 7/7/26"](https://community.openai.com/t/image-not-getting-created-7-7-26/1385934) saw "Image generation failed" in the chat even though the finished image was already sitting in My Images. They saw it in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari and in the Windows app, but not on some phones. If your image is there, you're done. Download it from the library.

If it isn't there, work through these steps in order and stop when one works:

1. **Retry once in a new chat with a shorter prompt.** In June, users linked failures to very long prompts. One heavy user found that prompts of about 2,000–7,000 words failed while a prompt of about 400 words usually worked. Another found that images failed in the desktop app with "High" thinking but worked on the website. OpenAI hasn't confirmed either link, but both are cheap to test.
2. **Create the image from the Images page.** You can start there instead of in a chat: select More, then Images, or go to chatgpt.com/images. On July 7, one user reported that this page worked when the same request failed inside a chat that used thinking.
3. **Try another browser setup.** After the July outage was resolved, OpenAI's support staff suggested an incognito window, clearing your browser's cache and cookies, or testing in another browser. In June they suggested clearing cookies and cache and then logging back in. If you're on a phone, trying the web version (or the reverse) tells you whether the problem is the app or the account.
4. **Email support if it still fails.** If failures continue after an outage is over and after step 3, OpenAI's support staff said "it may be account-specific" and asked people to email support@openai.com, then share the case number.

![Steps after Image generation failed: check the Images library, retry once in a new chat, use the Images page, change browser setup, then email OpenAI support](https://blog.laozhang.ai/posts/en/chatgpt-image-generation-not-working/img/image-generation-failed-steps.webp)

A long wait on its own is not a failure. OpenAI says image generation "may take a few minutes, depending on the complexity of your request" and that you can keep chatting while it runs. In the June episode, users saw a stall on "One last tweak" turn into "Image generation failed. Try again." after about 10 minutes or a page refresh. To judge how long is normal for your request, see [How Long Does ChatGPT Take to Make an Image?](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/how-long-does-chatgpt-take-to-make-an-image).

## "I wasn't able to generate the image due to an error on my side"

This sentence is a chat reply, not a system banner, and OpenAI has never explained it. The most likely reading, which is an inference rather than an OpenAI statement, is that the chat model is telling you its call to the image tool failed. It doesn't look like a limit banner, which gives a reset time, or a policy refusal, which names a category.

Treat it like "Image generation failed": check Images in the sidebar, check the status page, then follow the four steps in the previous section. During the July 21 outage, one user in the OpenAI Community thread said ChatGPT "keeps saying problem is from their side with image generation software". That is the same kind of self-report, and it matched a real incident that day.

## Limit banner with a reset time: retrying won't bring images back

If you see a banner that gives a reset time, you've hit a plan limit, not an error. One Plus user, in the [OpenAI Community thread about a 720-hour image limit wait](https://community.openai.com/t/image-creation-limit-720-hour-wait/1340856), quoted it as "You've hit the plus plan limit for image generations requests. You can create more images when the limit resets in 720 hours and 0 minutes." Free accounts have limits too, but the exact current wording of the Free banner isn't published. Whatever the wording, a reset time means you've hit a limit.

What you can rely on:

- The reset time in the banner is the only number OpenAI shows you about your own limit. OpenAI doesn't publish a daily image count for Free, Go or Plus. Pro is described as unlimited, "subject to abuse guardrails".
- Retrying, logging out or clearing your cache won't move the reset time.
- Buying credits doesn't add ChatGPT images. On the Free plan, limits reset when you upgrade to Plus, Pro or Business.

For the per-plan counts users have reported and typical reset windows, see [ChatGPT Plus and Go Image Generation Limits: How Many per Day?](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/chatgpt-image-generation-upload-limits). For legitimate ways to keep working until the reset, see [Can You Bypass ChatGPT Image Limits? Safe Routes That Actually Work](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/how-to-bypass-chat-gpt-image-limit).

## "May violate our guardrails": what a policy refusal lets you do

This message comes from a check that runs after the image is made, which is why it can appear at the end of an otherwise normal generation. Users have quoted it in the OpenAI Community in three forms:

- "We're so sorry, but the image we created may violate our guardrails around nudity, sexuality, or erotic content. If you think we got it wrong, please retry or edit your prompt."
- "…may violate our guardrails concerning similarity to third-party content."
- "…may violate our guardrails around acceptable depictions of teens and children."

These strings come from the English interface, quoted in the [OpenAI Community thread "Introducing GPT Images 2.5 in the API and ChatGPT"](https://community.openai.com/t/introducing-gpt-images-2-5-in-the-api-and-chatgpt/1395897) and in other September 2026 threads.

The message itself offers two options: retry or edit the prompt. A retry sometimes works. In the October thread below, one user's edit of a stock-style photo was refused several times and went through once. If the same request is refused again, edit the part of the request that touches the category named in the message, such as clothing, age, or a resemblance to a known character or brand. Rewording the request only to get the same content past the check is not a fix.

Refusals may be more frequent right now. In the [OpenAI Community thread on an image moderation regression](https://community.openai.com/t/image-moderation-regression-major-increase-in-false-positives-for-ordinary-and-non-graphic-fictional-scenes-violence/1403516), opened October 5, 2026, users reported far more false positives. Their examples included adult swimwear, fully clothed people, and slime on a horror monster's face rejected first as "sexuality" and then as "violence". These are reports from four users. OpenAI had not replied in that thread as of October 14.

## Custom GPTs and teen accounts: image generation is switched off

A custom GPT can create images only if its builder turned on **Image Generation** in the GPT's Capabilities settings, according to OpenAI's Images in ChatGPT help article. If a GPT keeps answering in text, ask its builder to enable that capability, or make the image in a regular ChatGPT chat. If you were looking for the DALL·E GPT, it has been retired from ChatGPT, and images now come from ChatGPT Images.

On a linked teen account, a parent or guardian may be able to control whether the teen can create or edit images. If the option has disappeared on a teen account, that setting is the first thing to check. Clearing the cache won't change it.

## Account-specific failures and unsupported countries: email support

Two situations aren't worth troubleshooting yourself:

- **Image generation fails for your account only, after an outage has ended**, and private windows, cleared cache and cookies, and a different browser all fail too. Email support@openai.com with screenshots of the exact message, your platform (web, desktop app, iOS or Android), your plan and the time it happened. That is the path OpenAI's forum support staff gave in both the June and July threads. If you post in the OpenAI Community as well, include your case number.
- **You're using ChatGPT from a country it doesn't support.** OpenAI's [list of ChatGPT supported countries and territories](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/7947663-chatgpt-supported-countries) warns that access from outside the listed countries "may result in your account being blocked or suspended". That is an access issue, not an image bug, and no setting fixes it.

Your plan alone doesn't lock you out. OpenAI says ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers, on web, iOS and Android. Only Images with thinking is limited to Plus, Pro and Business, so a Free or Go account can still create images.

## Steps that don't fix it: deleting chats, clearing memory, picking GPT-4o

Three steps come up often but aren't part of OpenAI's advice for failed images:

- **Deleting conversations.** It's destructive. OpenAI's help article says that to delete an image from My images, you delete the conversation it came from. Delete a chat to "reset" things and you lose the images inside it.
- **Clearing memory.** OpenAI's support staff haven't suggested this in any of the image-failure threads above. Their steps are cache and cookies, private windows, another browser, logging back in, and then support.
- **Switching to an older model such as GPT-4o.** ChatGPT Images is available on every tier today, so picking an older model in the menu isn't a way to get image generation back.

## Due today and ChatGPT still failing: move the job to the API

If a deliverable is due and ChatGPT is in the middle of an incident or showing a long limit wait, an API route can carry the job. OpenAI's image models (gpt-image-2.5-sunburst and gpt-image-2.5-flare) are billed separately from ChatGPT plans and have their own "Images" component on the status page. Model IDs and how to call them are in [ChatGPT Images 2.5: How to Use It in ChatGPT and the API](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/chatgpt-images-2-5). Official costs are in [GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst Pricing: Official Costs vs $0.03 per Call](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/gpt-image-2-5-api-pricing).

An API route is not immune to outages. The October 14 incident limited availability on both gpt-image-2.5 models. Any route built on those models can stall in the same upstream incident.

[LaoZhang API's GPT Image 2.5 documentation](https://docs.laozhang.ai/en/api-capabilities/gpt-image-2-5) lists gpt-image-2.5-flare-vip, gpt-image-2.5-sunburst-vip and gpt-image-2.5-web at $0.03 per call (public pricing as of September 24, 2026) and needs only a LaoZhang API key, not an OpenAI account.

*Disclosure: [laozhang.ai is our own service](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/about#laozhang). Its prices are platform pricing, not an independent comparison.*

## Questions about slow, missing and mobile ChatGPT images

### Why isn't ChatGPT image generation working today?

Check the Image Generation component on status.openai.com first. If it shows an incident, wait for it to resolve. If it's green, read the exact message: a reset time means a plan limit, "may violate our guardrails" means a policy refusal, and "Image generation failed" or "an error on my side" means the image step failed. For a failed image step, check your Images library, then try a private window, cleared cache and cookies, or another browser.

### ChatGPT is taking forever to generate an image. How can I fix this?

A few minutes is within what OpenAI describes as normal, and you can keep chatting meanwhile. If the progress line hasn't changed for around ten minutes, check Images in the sidebar (the image may already be there), then retry once in a new chat with a shorter prompt. Thresholds for normal and stuck waits are in [How Long Does ChatGPT Take to Make an Image?](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/how-long-does-chatgpt-take-to-make-an-image).

### Why are my images on ChatGPT not loading or not showing in the chat?

A finished image can be missing from the chat even though it was created. In July 2026, users saw "Image generation failed" in the chat while the image was already in My Images. Open Images in the sidebar. If the library won't load either, use the browser steps: a private window, cleared cache and cookies, or another browser.

### Why is ChatGPT not generating images on mobile?

ChatGPT Images works in the iOS and Android apps, so the platform alone isn't the cause. Check the status page and the exact message as you would on the web. Then try the same request on the web version. In the July 7 reports, failures showed up in desktop browsers and the Windows app while some phones worked, so switching devices tells you whether the problem is the app or your account.

### My image appeared, but the text or colors are wrong. Is that the same problem?

No. Generation worked, but the output has errors. See [Why ChatGPT and Gemini Break Text, Colors, and Worksheet Layouts](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/chatgpt-gemini-image-text-color-layout-fix) for that. If the problem is attaching an image rather than creating one, see [ChatGPT Free/Go/Plus Image Upload Limit: How Many Images Per Day?](https://blog.laozhang.ai/en/posts/chatgpt-plus-image-upload-limit).
